In their long and surprisingly successful career, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have made some fairly bland music, and a small handful of good albums: BloodSugarSexMajic (which, while loaded with filler, contains their best songs), the surprisingly excellent By The Way, and Californication. Dave Navarro had just left the band, and John Frusciante returned to take his place. The result is the band's most mature record aside from By The Way, and almost contains enough actual songs to be consistent. Almost.

Flea is, of course, Flea, which is a good thing. Anthony Kiedis remains both entertaining and somewhat annoying. And, like BloodSugar, this is a bit (but not quite as) long, so it tends to drag. The highs here are great, the lows are disappointing. If you're a fan, it's essential. If not...you can live without this.

1999-SOULDUMP
Produced By EARL HICKS & DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS

1. Bulldozers And Dirt
2. Nine Bullets
3. Uncle Frank
4. Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus)
5. Box Of Spiders
6. One Of These Days
7. Margo And Harold
8. The Company I Keep

10. Tales Facing Up
11. Love Like This
12. Mrs. Dubose
13. Zoloft
14. The Night G.G. Allin Came To Town

The second album from Drive-By Truckers was released in 1999, then got a wider distribution from a re-release on the larger New West Records in 2005. The album contains songs that continue in the vein of their raucous debut, Gangstabilly, but also shows that the band has the ability to turn out ballads like the solid opener, “Bulldozers And Dirt”. The album also features guitarist Mike Cooley stretching out as a songwriter, contributing three songs to the album along with bass player Rob Malone ‘s “Mrs. Dubose”, a change from having all but one of Gangstabilly’s songs written by Patterson Hood…and a change that would continue to grow from album to album. But the main writer here is still Hood, and some of his more memorable songs are on this album. Less country than Gangstabilly, this is also not much like the next album, the much more solid Southern Rock Opera.

Tracks like “Bulldozers And Dirt”, “Nine Bullets” and Cooley’s “Uncle Frank” are rock solid…but Pizza Deliverance ultimately suffers from a bit too much padding. At 14 tracks and well over an hour, there’s a lot to get through, particularly in the middle, which is broken up only by the strange “The President’s Penis Is Missing”. But if you’re a fan of the Truckers, and a fan of Southern Rock, then Pizza Deliverance should be just fine for you. Ultimately, this album is a lot of fun, and contains enough songs you’ll want to own to make it worthwhile. At this point, the band was not perfect, but was growing very quickly. This is an important part of the evolution of one of the more interesting and fun bands we have today. Recommended!

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.8/100, a mean average of 85.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 87.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 17.1.

This is an excellent list. Lots of "alt-country" here, which is much more Replacements-Meets-Bruce Springsteen than traditional folk or country.

I can't really give a good rating because I haven't listened to 96 of these albums, but I just want to say that I am convinced that Romanelli and AM are the same person

I really appreciate some of the more personal picks. This is a really good chart. 14 albums in common is pretty good. Perhaps one day I'll check out Uncle Tupelo.

Really love the detailed notes and careful selections!! I still feel it's a little too focused on American alt-rock for my liking however, would be nice to see some electronic releases/more hip hop besides Public Enemy at no.73!
