Produced by Rick Parashar & Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam is not just a band, it's a brotherhood. That's what has always made them great...you can feel the comraderie in their music. And when they have songs, they are simply great. On their debut, Ten, they had songs for days, and the result is a poweful and strong album connected by the brotherhood they already had. Grunge, blah blah blah. I don't care about how much flannel Eddie Vedder wore in the 90's. Ten is a great album, and I feel for those who don't get it. [First added to this chart: 12/06/2011]

Produced by Brendan O'Brien and Pearl Jam. This album debuted at number one and stayed there for five weeks...and Pearl Jam did absolutely zero promo work for it. That's how huge this band was in the early 90's. Tasked with trying to follow up their debut album Ten, Pearl Jam responded by making an album that was NOT Ten Part Two, but rather a strong collection of songs. This album has "Go", "Glorified G", "Daughter", "Rearviewmirror"...and it's unfortunately rarely given the credit for being simply a great album that it deserves. 1994 – EPIC

Whatever grunge had become with the dawn of the 90’s, it was beginning to dissipate as early as 1994. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain committed suicide in April, and seven months later, the genre’s other big star Pearl Jam released the very ungrunge album Vitalogy. The band took a wide left turn from their first two records (Ten and Vs.) with experiments in punk, harder rock, and strange artsy tracks that were as far from the Seattle sound as could be. Casual fans were maybe a bit lost in what they were doing, but the hardcore PJ folk were all in. Because it was Pearl Jam, Vitalogy and its strange packaging sold a gazillion copies out of the gate, and even though it was such an odd release, Pearl Jam held their hold as one of America’s most successful bands.

Vitalogy (which means the study of life) has some really great songs on it. “Better Man” and “Spin The Black Circle” are among the band’s best. “Nothingman” and “Immortality” are terrific as well. The strangeness of tracks like “Bugs” and “Hey Foxymophandlemama” is tough to explain, and it can be hard to not skip over those. But for the most part, Vitalogy is a worthwhile disc, even though it might take a bit of patience. The packaging is interesting, designed by singer Eddie Vedder and chock full of facts about health that are no longer really valid and notes that relate to the songs on the album. It’s one of the more interesting album packages in rock. Of course, they are still at it…touring, releasing an album here and there, fighting Ticketmaster. And always about their fans. Vitalogy is an odd duck, but it’s also a pretty good album.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 86.8/100, a mean average of 85.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 87.1/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 17.1.

This is an excellent list. Lots of "alt-country" here, which is much more Replacements-Meets-Bruce Springsteen than traditional folk or country.

I can't really give a good rating because I haven't listened to 96 of these albums, but I just want to say that I am convinced that Romanelli and AM are the same person

I really appreciate some of the more personal picks. This is a really good chart. 14 albums in common is pretty good. Perhaps one day I'll check out Uncle Tupelo.

Really love the detailed notes and careful selections!! I still feel it's a little too focused on American alt-rock for my liking however, would be nice to see some electronic releases/more hip hop besides Public Enemy at no.73!
