Top 28 Greatest Music Albums
by WaitAndSeer Unknown

Not a “Greatest Ever” list so much as a reflection of my personal favorites: the albums that have meant the most to me over the years and exposed me to what music can be.

Perhaps not their most revolutionary work, but the one that best represents the transcendent, awe-inspiring quality that all their best albums contain. [First added to this chart: 02/19/2018]

I don’t care about how many bad imitators and annoying trends Arcade Fire may have inspired with this album. It is a rock music at its most emotional and cathartic, with flawless lyricism and craftsmanship that adds up to an album unlike any other I’ve ever heard. [First added to this chart: 02/17/2018]

Most great albums take a few listens to really sink in, but I knew this was an all-time classic by the end of my first. Pop perfection from beginning to end. Doug Martsch attempted to distill the big ideas and bigger sound of Built to Spill into its most compact and accessible form, and ended up creating a masterpiece of guitar rock. What else can be said about Revolver? It is every bit the Great Leap Forward that critics describe, turning the gaze of rock/pop fans and musicians up from the celebration of life’s simple pleasures into a whole new world of potential for sonic and philosophical expression. Nothing can compare to Loveless. It is less an album than an experience, one that grabs you from start to finish and uses the towering expansiveness of its sound to transport the listener into an aural realm unlike any other. I struggle to put it into words, as the enormous impact of this album transcends whatever lyrics are buried deep within the mix of each track. You just have to put it on, close your eyes, and let it wash over you. [First added to this chart: 02/17/2018]

Hearing Sgt. Pepper for the first time is the most memorable experience I’ve ever had listening to an album...this wasn’t in the 60’s, it was 2009. Before, I had never cared much about music and just listened to the same handful of songs over and over again. This album opened my mind to the artistic potential of rock, and of music in general; every bit of exploration and expansion of my musical taste is thanks to Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. A work that towers over everything U2 has done before or since. Though I am not religious, the conscious attempt by U2 to use this album as a pulpit for their own beliefs as well as a statement on the very best and worst potential of mankind evokes feelings of spiritual transcendence hat never fails to send chills down my spine.
