Top 45 Music Albums of 1991 by Jimmy Dread

The first in an occasional series. 1991 was the year I got my first CD player, and at least 2 of the albums on this list were given to me as Xmas presents (see if you can work out which). I was still taping the Top 40 off the radio at this point, which is the first place I ever heard Nirvana, and watching the Chart Show on ITV. Happy times, and an outstanding year for music (so much so that I've picked it for the BYT2). Jimmy, August 2019

I'm writing this on the very week that they've just re-released Loveless in a newly remastered form, with all shiny boots on and everything. It just sounds ever so slightly louder than before, which is good 'cos I fear Shields may have taken another 20 years to decide if the amount of feedback 2:07 into Only Shallow was appropriate enough. It was Paul Aherne at school who lent me this after I'd badgered him for his copy after seeing "What You Do To Me" on the Chart Show. I couldn't get enough of it. The lurid fluorescent cover looked great in my burgeoning CD collection at the time. [First added to this chart: 02/12/2015]

Unfinished Sympathy may get all the plaudits, but it's Lately that always gives me goosebumps. Shara Nelson's best vocal performance by a mile, and WHAT. A. BEAT. Extra marks for Horace Andy - quite a coup, that - although I could do without Tricky's Bristolian drawl. [First added to this chart: 02/12/2015]

Never got the Weddoes until my old bandmate Peter made me buy this and Bizarro one day when I wondered into The Rock Box. I think Gedge is at his most vitriolic here - you can hear the heartbreak with every Albini-engineered kick drum driving into the depths of your soul. [First added to this chart: 02/12/2015]

A real love-hate-love record. Loved it when it first came out. Then every fucker had a copy and it lost its appeal, so I ditched it to the back of my record box in favour of all the Britpop bands coming through. And this is where it stayed until about 18 months ago, where my hardened limey heart gave up fighting and listened to it with youthful abandon whilst driving past a garden centre in Camberley with the window down and a checked shirt on (they're back in, you know). As a 16 year old kid I couldn't have given a toss whether this album was about E or what. I heard Loaded on a Now compilation and couldn't get enough of it. However my fondest memory was spinning this LP in the car straight after a job interview - and "Movin' On Up" was exactly what I did, out of Debenhams and into the merry world of fragrance retail!
