This album contains two of the greatest songs MM ever recorded, The Parting of the Sensory and Missed the Boat. While the lyricism in this album doesn't quite reach The Moon & Antarctica levels, it's still far superior to the songwriting of most artists. It's a solid album all the way through, and the first six songs really stand out. The second half is weaker, but Education, Little Motel, and Spitting Venom are all very entertaining. Spitting Venom is the longest track on the album, but its good all the way through, but it isn't as great as say The Stars Are Projectors."  [+]  Reply

But that is mostly because of the fact that her approach of making music was completely unknown at the time. She makes the song and has a vision and then makes sure she finds a producer that understands her. And if the product isn’t good enough, she doesn’t settle for less and continues her search for the perfect sound. Basically, the same tactic that she advices in her lyrics that should be used in relationships. It doesn’t sound like a big deal now, because almost all female artists after her, followed this formula, and it was also the most logical outcome for women, because culture has been (and somewhat still is) presenting music production (as well as playing certain instruments) as a male thing. This approach also created a blueprint for electropop in general. The way that the producer’s creative input is of almost equal importance can be found back in artists like Drake and Future today. Suddenly there wasn’t just one song, there were remixes too; the vocals could be thrown around and reinterpretated endlessly. Again, today it’s hard to realize what the big deal is, because that’s the norm now, but that’s because of Madonna. And of course she gave a voice to feminine sexuality in music."  [+]  Reply

Beck's nonsensical lyrics are off putting to some (hot dogs no doze hot sex in back rows) but perfect for an album which wants to be nothing but fun, almost to the point of parody with its closer Debra. It's not a huge departure from the s...""If you were to extrapolate what you'd expect an album like this to sound like given Tame Impala's trajectory from Innerspeaker -> Lonerism -> Currents, The Slow Rush is what you'd expect. For that reason I don't anticipate critics to really go crazy over this. It's not a huge departure from the sounds from Currents, in some places it sounds like he used the same synth settings as some tracks from Currents, but he does bring in even more new sounds and mixing techniques into, whether it's woodwinds or congas or miscellaneous percussive sounds or just using his voice in wild ways (which is hardly new for him). That said, Kevin Parker is as talented at production/arrangement/mixing as anyone out there. Hendrix had the guitar and KP has Ableton. He's an artist that just doesn't release anything that isn't meticulously crafted and detailed. He's not going to convert fans on this one like he did on Currents and similarly if you're a stoned hippie longing for the days of innerspeaker and lonerism dunga dunga throwback 60's sound you might want to look elsewhere. That said, I think it is better than currents, songs like Posthumous Fogiveness and One More Hour showcase him returning to the more lengthy adventurous song structures from Lonerism and Currents didn't have a ton of that outside of Let it Happen (which I still think is more long than it is really complex albeit still being a fantastic song) and it has some of his best most diverse sounding production and catchy pop hooks on it as well. Move along, there's really nothing to see here. Just an all-time great padding his stats with another quality piece of art."  [+]  Reply
