For a certain age of Americans, the first time they ever heard live music was probably within a church. No matter the denomination, structure, or instrumentation. When I listen to the United Sacred Harp Singers on this album, I hear something that is incredibly raw, authentic, and American. I was and still am nervous to sing during a congregation. I am envious of those that are confident enough to join in on a hymn on a whim. (Yeah I know.) :)
My father has always sang at church regardless of the song. At times I was embarrassed of that fact, but as I've grown older, it's been something that I've come to greatly respect. In the case of the Sacred Harp Singers, recorded on this particular album, this was just any given Sunday. To meet and rejoice in hymn is part of their weekly life. It is their chance to express themselves artistically and communally. There is an incredible beauty to the honesty and artistry that are on display on this record. The coming together of a community to create something that they can call their own. The folks present at this recording achieve what I would consider to be a musical ideal. Whcih would essentially be creating music for the sake of creating music. (Of course the purpose of the music ultimately in this setting is to praise and worship God, but, when it sounds this good, I think all people can agree that that's a good thing.)

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.7/100, a mean average of 95.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 96.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 7.5.

This is one of the most interesting charts I have ever seen, even without notes. Roscoe Holcomb, Shirley Ann Lee (I need to hear more), Karen Dalton and The United Sacred Harp Convention are particular noteworthy inclusions, and there are many others rarely seen.

It's the best iteration yet, Chief. No overall theme/mood this time, but it's all over the place in the best way possible. Just a bunch of excellent picks. It's all great, the popular stuff, the underrated, niche but still well-known picks, and some artists I've never heard of. The perfect balance. Wouldn't be surprised if my chart (one day) looks and feels similar to this organized chaos.

This might be the most diverse and interesting "exercise chart" you've done so far Chief. Some picks that I couldn't agree more with (Isn't Anything is in the same tier as Loveless and Slowdive's s/t is their best, hell yeah), and a lot of other classic "Chief picks". I'm gonna regularly use the term "Chief picks" from now on, I like it. I'm browsing the shit out of this chart in the canon game.
