funk - '60s & '70s
by Boltzmann

Birthed from a mind experiment of James Brown to switch the emphasis from the backbeat - which immortalized rock 'n' roll - to the downbeat - more specifically, to the first beat (a.k.a. "the one"). It pretty much started dance music as we know it today; it's why we go out, build discos and clubs, and just come together and dance.

I don't want to make a separate chart for disco, because the transition is too vague. Many disco albums have more traditional funk tracks on them; many old school funkers started playing around with disco. I consider disco a subgenre of an overarching term "funk" of which funk itself is also a subgenre using this terminology.

Chronologically ordered, and inclusion does not imply anything about quality.
