Black Midi have been killing it ever since their first release. They are just at another level of good. Even though I don't revisit their outings a lot, every time I listen to them I'm just left speechless. It's one of THOSE bands.

I don't even know where to begin. Maybe due to this album's release schedule in 4 volumes, or just because I love Beach House, but this is by far my favorite album this year. If there are albums above it is because I value those album's artistic integrity or whatever, but wow, "Once Twice Melody" is just everything I feel and then more. As I've read other say, this is their most "cinematic" release so far. I'm really a fan of experimenting with structure, or just accomodating something so it feels like a literary work. This album's idea of playing to the strength of having 4 sides or parts makes me love it even more. Every part has a definite start and end. The opening track to each one has a very well executed vibe of fitting as an opener for that part and also of "feeling" like the first, second, third and four act respectively, if that makes sense.
"Once, Twice, Melody" and "Superstar" are two of their best songs ever. "Through Me" is a song that inspired me to make a drawing. I absolutely adore "Runaway"'s intro. "Only You Know" just makes me want to go out into the night and drive to a loved one's house. "Masquerade" is a banger, and "Hurts to Love" is just pure, unfiltered Beach House.
According to Apple Music, this is my most listened to album this year, and I don't think another album will come out that will top that (maybe Alvvays' Blue Rev (or maybe, just maybe, but I don't trust Robert Smith anymore, if The Cure does release "Songs From A Lost World")).
Anyways, I'm in love with this album, even though not every cut is as good, but a recurring theme for me this year is loving double LP's or just incredibly long records that try a lot of different things, and even though they don't land everything, those high points are worth everything. This is my biggest surprise of the year. I had listened to "U.F.O.F." but wasn't very crazy about it. "Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You" on the other hand made me fall in love with this band. Yeah, not every song is amazing, but the whole vibe is exactly what I needed at this point in my life. It flows so well from song to song, and it just has so many to choose from that I believe you if your top 3 from it are entirely different from mine (all of this just to defend that "Wake Me Up To Drive" owns).

Radiohead is dead, long live Radiohead?
In all seriousness, I read somewhere that this is the first project that has "sprung from Radiohead" that really feels like its own thing instead of just random dart throws in a wall or trying to come off as an experimental thingy like Atoms for Peace. Also, while Thom Yorke's ANIMA was fantastic, The Smile just plays to the strenghts of having two more band members contributing their styles to create an amazing atmosphere. "The Same" is a haunting, theatrical opening that screams Thom Yorke, but then songs like "Speech Bubbles" (which is so dauntingly beautiful) or "Free In The Knowledge", couldn't just have existed without Jonny Greenwod's experience with orchestra. The drums throughout this are a highlight, and also, something I haven't read anywhere, but this has very cool bass lines.
If we don't ever get another Radiohead record, it would really be a shame, but The Smile has proven themselves as a very interesting take that ... I guess I wouldn't really mind. I've seen the live performances on YouTube (dying to see them irl) and it's amazing the energy Yorke and Greenwood still have after so many years of creating music. They're probably at the top of their game, and I think that even though this is an amazing debut, we've still haven't heard the best The Smile has to offer. They're just creating a song every week or so it seems!
I could go on and on for every song, but I already left a review, and I'll just say this is one of my most played albums this year. I'm not very crazy about cuts like "Pana-vision", "The Opposite" or "Hairdryer", but other songs like "We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings", "The Smoke", "Skrting on the Surface" or "Thin Thing" have been on loop in my playlist. Not so sure as of right now. It kinda blends together, but also, I really dig that. It's a very large collection of songs, each one with something to set it apart. I really dig the atmosphere, and even though I don't think this will top their debut, I'm really happy they're back.

Haven't listened to it as much as I've liked, but yeah, the production in this is very good. The album goes strong for its whole run. I have a feeling that this will end up lower in this list as time goes on, but my first impression was a 10/10. Gotta admit I overhyped it when it came out. Since then I have lowered the score, but anyways, music really reveals itself as time goes on.

I'll have to listen to this more, but since I heard the singles I knew this was going to be great. I'm still going to have to process it more, but it is, without a doubt, one of the years best's.

The word that immediately comes to mind for describing this is: fresh. Maybe other people are up to their throats with King Gizzard, but it's a band that simply can't cease to amaze me. I saw them live this year and it's the best concert I've attended so far. The energy, the people and the soundscape is just another level of good.
I don't like making comparisons like "This is this band's Kid A or this band's White Album" because then I think the music industry / artform isn't really going forward and just keeps on getting stuck on what has come before, but anyways, everything I've read mentions this being this band's White Album. I mean, yeah, maybe, but most of all, "Omnium Gatherum" plays to the bands biggest strengths while pushing forward into new and interesting styles, while playing with a sort of "mirror structure" with the tracklist that I really dig.
"The Dripping Tap" is surreal, "Magenta Mountain" and "Kepler-22b" are also two of their best songs in my opinion. Other highlights for me include "Persistence" and "Candles". You could say most of is "filler" or whatever, but taken as a whole, I really think this album shows the unreal amounts of energy and commitment they have. [First added to this chart: 05/06/2022]
