2. Fan Club
3. I Fall
4. Born To Kill
5. Stab Yor Back
6. Feel The Pain
7. New Rose
8. Fish

12. I Feel Alright
Never mind the Sex Pistols…here’s The Damned. Not only were The Damned the lesser known of the three main original British punk bands from 1976-77, they were the first of the three (The Clash being the other) to release full length studio albums. After their famous tour with the Pistols, Clash and The Heartbreakers (not the Tom Petty variety), they went into the studio with producer Nick Lowe and ten days later came away with Damned Damned Damned, which is every bit as good as the debuts by punk’s other two leading lights. The record includes “New Rose”, the band’s first single which had been released the previous year (it was the first punk single, beating “Anarchy In The UK” by five weeks), and the excellent “Neat Neat Neat”. So…what happened?
Their second album, produced by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, was a major flop. They lost their record deal and split up. They reformed and made the great Machine Gun Etiquette, but despite still being together, numerous personnel changes and having released just 9 albums since the dawn of the 80’s has made The Damned the lost children of the original punk movement. But this band deserves better, and their two great works, Damned Damned Damned and Machine Gun Etiquette, will hopefully live on for future generations to know that there was more than just a pair of great British punk pioneers. Punk became a shadow of itself in the 90’s, but this debut stands as a blueprint for how to do it the right way. And that, as a legacy, is good enough. [First added to this chart: 09/28/2024]

1975-COLUMBIA
Produced By BROOKS ARTHUR
1. When The Party's Over
2. At Seventeen
3. From Me To You
4. Bright Lights And Promises
5. In The Winter
6. Water Colors
7. Between The Lines
8. The Come On
9. Light A Light
10. Tea & Sympathy
11. Lover's Lullaby
After Janis Ian first burst on the scene as a child prodigy in 1967, she promptly disappeared. Her comeback was this 1975 album, a stunningly beautiful and mature collection of songs. The big hit was "At Seventeen", one of the more honest and perfect products of the singer-songwriter movement. But there's a lot more to offer here. It's not perfect, but it's still a great work. Ian's voice is warm and intelligent, as are her lyrics. It's a pleasant listen all the way through. This showed that Ian was truly an artist to watch for in the future.
Janis Ian has had a spotty career, but when she does release an album, it's rarely a disappointment. Between The Lines is an important album of its time, and one of her finest. [First added to this chart: 03/15/2024]

13. A House For Sale
For two decades, it was hard to find a harder working artist than Millie Jackson. From Georgia, this soul, R&B and disco singer cranked out twelve albums in the seventies, and another nine in the eighties. Tough to fathom these days, when an album every 3-5 years is more the norm. But Millie Jackson isn’t quite like anybody else. She is known today as the Mother Of Hip Hop because she would frequently incorporate long spoken sections in her songs. She has never been afraid to put her personality out there, and she has never flinched at the opportunity to be a bit more raunchy than most (check out the album cover of her 1989 album Back To The Shit). But, more than anything else, Millie Jackson has more soul than most, and she does it as well as anyone.
Caught Up is her fourth album, and it is considered to be her best. For good reason. “If Loving You Is Wrong” is a golden take on the Luther Ingram hit, and includes an almost six minute spoken interlude. “I’m Tired Of Hiding” holds nothing back…it’s the story of an affair with a married man, which is the theme of the album. In fact, the first side is from a mistresses’ point of view, while side two is from the wife’s side. The end result is a masterful soul record, played by the great Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Millie Jackson never had a number one album or single, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t a powerful force that deserves to be heard. After five more records in the 90’s, she has slowed to almost a halt as far as recording, but she’s still out there. Check this one out! [First added to this chart: 02/16/2024]
