60/100
I am such a fundamental Halsey hater. I remember how commercial prime time, and thinking she was insufferable and pretentious, thinking she is a slightest bit of inventive. Then the news came around everything about her life, and I decided I would give this a chance (even considering me hating her Trent Reznor produced album from 2021 with my guts). Damn, this is actually a good album. For the record, it's super honest in what it portrays. The fact that she named it The Great Impersonator is an amazing choice for two reasons: both because she realizes she is not an original, she copies and sometimes can be derivative and therefore give the body of work a much more humble taste in my mouth. And two, considering the context of her almost dying and leaving her son with nothing, she is credibly giving him something of different music styles: her son can grow up and like alternative eras and sounds, and his mom makes sure to have something for every mood, or at least also bring in her own life in these songs. So in my opinion, it's as much of a tribute to her idols, as it is a tribute to her son. There's also a good amount of really good songs, a lot of them are also drawn from sources of inspirations most good newer cats have like Joni Mitchell on the gutpunch The End (my favorite on here). Not everything ends up sounding good, worst case is I Never Loved You that has 0% Bush and basically is 100% Swift. There's also no Springsteen-energy on Letter To God 1983. The mellower songs in general are what drew me in. Although I am not a fan of her writing style, it's never been as raw in what it says, and it peaks with Only Living Girl In LA, possibly also with the best melody.
Honestly, I wish that nice words and a hug could take all her problems away, cause if it could, I'd find Halsey in a heartbeat. Don't listen to the poster reviewers about this album, it really is worth an empathic listen.
