Apparently Cigarettes After Sex has another self titled album in 2011? I don't know and I don't care and am not going to change it.

Hey Seth! Excellent diary man, even if we don't see eye to eye on some albums. It's s always interesting to read what you have to say, it's very succinct. Thoroughly enjoyed what you had to say about King Gizzard & Mount Eerie. So other than flattery, I did have a bit of a purpose for posting. I don't know whether you take recommendations but I'd like to put this record forward:

Aromanticism by Moses Sumney

It's made a lot of people's end of year lists (at least what I've seen) and it certainly is well deserved. It's a very exuberant album that you can't really peg to just one genre throughout. I thought you might appreciate something a little different. Anyway keep up the good work!

Thanks! I actually REALLY appreciate the rec.

Adding to list now!

Anxious thinking is probably exactly what it is. hehe. I don't even know what this means.

I'm finding this to be entirely true for new music. Sometimes I don't want to give the ax, but then I'm like eh, there so much good music and I don't really want to waste my time "getting into" something that maybe isn't worth it. Maybe I'll come back to it if peeps are like no dude 5 years later this album still is the best.

Alright - here's another bout of (mostly) first listens (some are 2 or 3) and ramblings about first impressions:

Over the past few days: still doing the 2017 review.

Yeah again I mostly love the Writer in the Dark song (idk what it's actually called). The rest wasn't shit my self worthy and I probably will hold on to that song and ditch the rest... might still rate/rank and might still make 2017, but I'm kind of surprised it's a top 10 record or whatever (top 20?). Anyway, I picked on some lesbian stuff (then again I could be a complete idiot) - maybe this is why? idk.

Melodrama by Lorde

It was nice to hear some throw backs and funny to hear Chuck D diss millennials.

Nothing Is Quick In The Desert by Public Enemy

Yes. I listened to it... Still sad about this band going south. I think what I really need to remember that it was Brian Eno all along. U2 - Coldplay... quite possibly the real magic was Eno. I mean sure those bands have talent in them too, but it makes me wonder. Same as George Martin and The Beatles. Post Beatles work just isn't nearly as good (except maybe John cause of his lyrics). Anyway this is garbage and I likely won't listen to it again. Well and let me rephrase- it is garbage for a band who used to write albums like Death and All His Friends. It's actually pretty comparable to much of the music of 2017.

Kaleidoscope EP by Coldplay

I couldn't even make it through the record. I was playing a video game with this and it was just so annoying I had to stop playing my game and put on another record... unfortunately the next one wasn't much better.

Having said that, I feel like they did build a unique sound for their band that didn't sound like hipster trash (sorry no offense... I just feel like this is one of those bands that fits an annoying niche... It's like they only play fresh organic sustainable instruments).

Crap I was trying to say something nice... oh yeah - it seems their sound has matured well and even though I had to turn it off I think I'll give it another spin.

Crack-Up by Fleet Foxes

I don't know what it is but I just can't get into this band. I see a lot of people I respect like them and I just don't get it. I really don't get the appeal. I have yet to find a beat, a rhythm, a melody, a unique sound, or SOMETHING I can latch on to... but I never find it. EVER. It's annoying. I'm like in the dog house and can't enjoy the party or something.

A Deeper Understanding by The War On Drugs

This on the other hand has VERY much so impressed me with a couple more listens. Definitely going into my top 30 somewhere. I feel for the first time there are songs where it doesn't sound like he's on ambien (fake empire is fantastic for this style of singing and I absolutely love that song, but EVERY song... gets a bit monotonous and stops being a style and just starts being boring - sorry) - and those are exciting moments on the album for me. I also really like the unique percussion on the album. Seems fresh.

Sleep Well Beast by The National

Oh geez... idk I think for the first time I'm listening to Bono's lyrics as the main point of the music (which bothers me knowing the band is much more capable). And I'll have to say I appreciate his honest writing at times. It's pretty damn vulnerable at times (Something about a showman's job is to lie or that he should be dead, etc.)

Songs Of Experience by U2

I'm a fan of bombastic in your face music. And this totally does it. Yet takes a trip to some unique places. Idk... it might be growing on me, but at the same time I can't think of anything terribly memorable on it - something that takes me back for more. Maybe a good song or two but nothing amazing either.

Saturation by Brockhampton

I like the Flaming Lips, but I've yet to fall in love with anything they've done and this is no exception. It's unique and all and totally Flaming Lips, but I don't really think they are a band I'll do much more than Yoshima. That's a much more memorable work.

Oczy Mlody by The Flaming Lips

This is actually what I escaped to when I got sick of Fleet Foxes and War on Drugs. It was a nice release and I remember liking it, but I don't remember why.

Not Even Happiness by Julie Byrne

I got sick of this halfway through. I think she's a spoiled brat and it shows. Shame - she had a really good drummer and they made some unique music at times.

After Laughter by Paramore

Dude is a great pop performer for sure. Does he write his own music? Regardless it's pretty good for pop.

รท by Ed Sheeran

Nice to hear old Neil release something. I feel some of the lyrics is what I'd expect from him but some of the others either go over my head or are a bit meh. Nothing musically interesting either. So either I need to go back and get the lyrics more or this is a bit of a dud.

Hitchhiker by Neil Young

Something about nobody can write new songs anymore (song quote on this album)... hahaha especially if you lack originality... idk sorry Killers but this didn't do anything for me. It's kinda sad cause Brandon Flowers is kind of a big part of the music scene here, but I'll be honest, The Killers never really did it for me AT FIRST... then they grew on me a bit, but they really never were anything great. And it shows.

Wonderful Wonderful by The Killers

This was interesting, but a bit too movie score sounding for me. Some unique electronic elements... but I was hoping for something better. I suppose I saw Deutsche Grammophon and was expecting a higher caliber. This wasn't nearly as bad as I'm making it sound -benchmarks and all.

That opinion on Julie Byrne is objectively bad.

It's almost as good as I liked it... hehe. It was a nice escape from those albums though, even if I didn't remember anything special about the album. That part is indeed objectively bad... hehe. But I remember liking it - totally worth another listen for sure.

I guess I should update this. Still not done.

This has a slightly (very slightly) different feel to it musically an lyrically. I remember more personal lyrics to it... it's like, eh nobody's going to listen to this, so might as well pour my heart out... or maybe he's a "well known/established" artist now, so maybe people care more about it...idk. Nothing special about this album.

All The Light Above It Too by Jack Johnson

This is the first St. Vincent album I really like. The others I didn't get or something. This clicked much sooner. Pills and Los Ageless and Happy Birthday, Johnny, and well... there's just so many. Having said that I feel like this could be a Lady Gaga album... I mean there's nothing wrong with that either... so on one hand I really like it and on the other hand there's this lingering feeling of insincere pop, and I don't know which it is.

MASSEDUCTION by St. Vincent

I can see why people would like this, but I feel like this is a regurgitation of some sorts (like most things...). I can't pin it down. It's nice, but nothing really brings me back for more.

Antisocialites by Alvvays

I was expecting more from this cause of how I've heard people talk it up - like oh it's an opera singer or something. It was indeed not your run of the mill and intriguing for sure, but neither did it have something which touched my soul, causing me to want more.

Arca by Arca

Seemed like a cool kids album. idk... unique sounds and the such, but wasn't crazy about any of the lyrics/subject matter. It didn't do anything for me mentally or emotionally - it just seemed like one of those albums hip people listen to for one year and then never listen to again.

Ctrl by SZA

I bad mouthed the cover and a bunch of Bjรถrk fans went apeshit... hehe. Idk - it's a really disturbing cover to me. Furthermore, I really liked her Debut album, and there's likely other albums I would like of hers if I spent more time with them, but I've listened to a handful of them and they basically all sound like this one (it feels like)... in otherwords Debut seemed unique and had flair, whereas the rest seem formulaic.

Utopia by Bjรถrk

You know I've heard people talk about how Led Zeppelin or U2 are so egotistical musically and the such... damn... idk... do they just completely ignore the rap genre. Not all rap of course - but there's a lot of rappers full of themselves and this album is not short of that. Anyway - I really only got 4 songs into it and haven't been interested in coming back (something came up and had to stop).

4:44 by Jay-Z

I liked this... but I can't really say way... reminded me a bit of that Julie Byrne album. Perfectly nice and all, but I wasn't really pulled in either (nothing struck me/caught my attention... which probably is a sign of how dense I am).

Music For People In Trouble by Susanne Sundfรธr

I felt like was listening to the newest Jet Set Radio video game. Seems like a mixed bag for me. Sometimes I was incredibly impressed with the layering and textures (especially the barely noticeable ones in the bass). Other times it sounded like cheap electronic music. Other times it felt like someone was literally pressing all the buttons on their pad in random order.

Black Origami by Jlin

I can see the potential in this one. It has some character to it, but then at times gets a bit boring... idk. Might revisit.

World Eater by Blanck Mass

Just starting this one and it's like... I like 70's soft rock and can sing uniquely.

Lotta Sea Lice by Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile
