I thought your title said my discoveries per hour and I thought... damn Tilly is dedicated... but then I noticed it was just that you commented in the last hour...
In short: sometimes I'm really an ignorant guy: I just can't imagine in hindsight that I have missed any of these albums at the time they were issued. I'm just wondering all-knowing Tilly who knows everything of the nineties, if you have ever heard of these bands which really have their roots in those years?
No. Never even heard mention of this guy. But, I've been pretty out of it since 2008. Which one should I start with u reckon? I gotta get my diary started again. :)
I’d say why not start with the one of this year but to me AM is his best.

I have been reviewing my favorite first Quarter albums of this year so now back on the seventies where I especially delved in a number of albums some people would call hardrock and many other people not:
- Desolation Boulevard by Sweet (nr 53 of 1974 and nr 2782 overall): this is purely something that my younger self would not like if I wouldn't look into this one: I absolutely was in love with the hit Fox on the Run and it also contains the fine The Six Teens; on the US version (but not on the official UK version) also appears Ballroom Blitz; The album as a whole is maybe not the greatest ever but still I like it.
- Double Vision by Foreigner (nr 70 of 1978 and nr 3506 overall): again an album I mainly like for its hits Hot Blooded and Blue Morning, Blue Day. The rest of the album is actually pretty terrible (including the title track) but I cannot do anything else than include this one because of its hits.
- Don't Look Back by Boston (nr 68 of 1978 and nr 3449 overall): this same thing could be said of this album; I'm a big lover of the title track and the guitars of Boston never sounded back than on this song, but in fact I like most of the other songs here as well and especially A Man I'll Never be.
And then a threesome of the Scorpions, a band of which I really love their seventies period (with the Tokyo Tapes as the quintessential live album) but not so much what came after that. When going through this album I keep going back to the Tokyo Tapes tracks and in nearly all instances find that the final versions of those tracks are on the live album and not on the regular albums:
- Fly To The Rainbow by Scorpions (nr 216 of 1974 and nr 16944 overall): a bit of an inbetween album between their psychedelic first album (which I also really like) and their later hardrock albums with the title song as the perfect and very good example of their first period and the opening track Speedy's Coming as the example of their latter period. All by all I like it.
- In Trance by Scorpions (nr 132 of 1975 and nr 8469 overall): there is a magnificent quartet of songs to be found on this album: Dark Lady, the title track, Top Of The Bill and Robot Man; the rest of the album is still ok
- Virgin Killer by Scorpions (nr 112 of 1976 and nr 7920 overall): and again enough good tracks to make this a very fine album: Pictured Life, Backstage Queen and Polar Nights.
I don't know how much longer I'll linger in the seventies 😉
I think I will linger a bit longer in the seventies now with another of those typical hardrock bands of the time: UFO and with the three albums which are not in my top lists yet:
- Phenomenon by UFO (nr 66 of 1974 and nr 3821 overall): this album is a bit overrated: it contains two of their best songs: although this is not their best version of Doctor Doctor this remains one of my favorite hardrock songs ever even in this version. And the version of Rock Bottom kicks ass here even more than on their live albums. Overall one of their best albums although Michael Schenker had just left the Scorpions and hasn't yet completely put his stamp on this album
- Force It by UFO (nr 87 of 1975 and nr 4890 overall): maybe more of Schenker here but less good songs although Let It Roll, Shoot Shoot and Out In The Streets are still good UFO songs
- No Heavy Petting by UFO (nr 97 of 1975 and nr 7031 overall): a bit more of the same but still some good tracks.
And I think it's now a good time to start with something that I already wanted to do a long time: what would the seventies be without ELO and what would an investigation of ELO (and the Move and maybe something of Roy
Wood) without the fantastic forum posts by Listmeister listening to.. yes ELO some two years ago. Here is his chart:

I'll only mention the albums here I have not yet listened to (meaning mainly the first ones and only the ones of the seventies of course).
As promised I have been focusing on the first three albums of ELO (I tried the seventies albums of the Move as well but I didn't really like them) and I hadn't listened to their first three yet:
- The Electric Light Orchestra by Electric Light Orchestra (nr 101 of 1970 and nr 5431 overall): not heavily influenced by Jeff Lynne (Roy Wood still rules) and in fact I only really liked Mr. Radio: a really unequal album but good enough to be included in top chart of 1970
- ELO 2 by Electric Light Orchestra (nr 155 of 1973 and nr 8082 overall): this album only has 5 tracks and although you can feel that this could grow into the fantastic band they were going to become the songs were a bit too long and couldn't keep their focus for the whole song except for of course Roll Over Beethoven and the title tells it all: this must be one of the quintessential songs of ELO with that fantastic mix between rock and classical instrumentation. This is one of my favorites of them and in this longer version this track even shines more than on the shorter ones.
- On The Third Day by Electric Light Orchestra (nr 68 of 1973 and nr 3034 overall): The middle section trio starting with Showdown is very good but the rest of the album isn't yet the top. It's still good but they would really start to shine with Eldorado, one of my favorites of them.
And then I also listened to the only classic CCR album I hadn't yet listened to:
- Pendulum by Creedence Clearwater Revival (nr 64 of 1970 and nr 3168 overall): their first a bit unequal album after their string of classics but if you have Hey Tonight and Pagan Baby, you don't have to be ashamed. Still a very good CCR album.
And now for some southern rock:
- Outlaws by Outlaws (nr 129 of 1975 and nr 8157 overall): some good rock tracks and sometimes a bit too countryish but everything is made up by the epic Green Grass & High Tides which could be mistaken as a rip-off of Free Bird but to which I don't agree at all: this is a very original and invigorating electric music fest.
- Flyin' High by Blackfoot (nr 156 of 1976 and nr 11274 overall): I had already checked out Strikes but this one is about equally good although a bit less. The highlights are the title track and Save Your Time. Just plain good southern rock.
- Molly Hatchet by Molly Hatchet (nr 134 of 1978 and nr 7568 overall): and then there's this completely underrated southern rock band of which I especially knew Bounty Hunter and of which I had already heard live albums. But the regular albums kick ass as well. Apart of the already mentioned Bounty Hunter , this debut especially features Gator Country with guitar solos all over the place. It also has a fine cover version of Dreams by that other great southern rock band.
- Flirtin' With Disaster by Molly Hatchet (nr 157 of 1979 and nr 10859): and their sophomore album is even better. Apart from the title track also Boogie No More and Good Rockin' are just fantastic pieces of guitar work. The voice of Danny Joe Brown can sometimes be a bit tiresome but these guys rock.
- Another Mother Further by Mother's Finest (nr 522 of 1977 and nr 48628): and now for something completely different but still southern rock: to me the best fusion between funk and hardrock ever made. I don't know their first album and some people say this sophomore album is a bit of a sellout but when I was young Piece of A Rock was all over the place on one of my favorite hardrock radio shows at that moment. And I still like it together with Baby Love and Mickey's Monkey. The rest of the album is maybe not the top but still a good one for my 1977 year chart.
This is my final entry for the seventies in which I listened to a bit of "art"-punk:
- Music For Pleasure by The Damned (nr 196 of 1977 and nr 14.401 overall): there was one album of the Damned of the seventies I hadn't listened to yet and to be honest this also their worst. Not that there aren't any good tracks: the first three tracks are still classic Damned tracks but in one way or another they don't succeed in keeping the momentum. Overall still an album to put in my year chart though
- The Only Ones by The Only Ones (nr 84 of 1978 and nr 4209 overall): and this one completely took me by surprise. I already knew Another Girl, Another Planet and very much like it but I thought they were a one-hit wonder. But the whole of this album is just one great song after another with Beast as an absolute highlight. The album is maybe more new wave than punk but it certainly has the vibe of a punk album.
- Secondhand Daylight by Magazine (nr 64 of 1979 and nr 3525 overall): although I know most of the songs I hadn't yet listened to the full album of this great band. Feed The Enemy, Rhythm of Cruelty, Back To Nature and Permafrost are all absolute classics not to be missed and otherwise (except maybe for Thin Air), there is not a weak track to be found here.
And this finally ends my journey into seventies music I hadn't yet listened to. This certainly doesn't mean I have finished with this decade but here is my intermediary top chart of the seventies which features most of those great genres that the seventies have spawned:

- The Dreaming by Kate Bush (nr 4 in the BEA year rank of 1982): I must admit I prefer the first albums of Kate Bush to this rather experimental one. Sat In Your Lap and the title tracks are also fairly weird but I like them more than the others which sometimes even verge on the silly when looking back. But anyway just good enough to make it to my personal top chart of 1982.
The next album to listen to is Pornography by The Cure.
