But that is mostly because of the fact that her approach of making music was completely unknown at the time. She makes the song and has a vision and then makes sure she finds a producer that understands her. And if the product isn’t good enough, she doesn’t settle for less and continues her search for the perfect sound. Basically, the same tactic that she advices in her lyrics that should be used in relationships. It doesn’t sound like a big deal now, because almost all female artists after her, followed this formula, and it was also the most logical outcome for women, because culture has been (and somewhat still is) presenting music production (as well as playing certain instruments) as a male thing. This approach also created a blueprint for electropop in general. The way that the producer’s creative input is of almost equal importance can be found back in artists like Drake and Future today. Suddenly there wasn’t just one song, there were remixes too; the vocals could be thrown around and reinterpretated endlessly. Again, today it’s hard to realize what the big deal is, because that’s the norm now, but that’s because of Madonna. And of course she gave a voice to feminine sexuality in music."  [+]  Reply

If they took out “All In A Mouse’s Night” and replaced that song with the buried forgotten gem “Inside And Out”, this would’ve been a near perfect record. The jazz tendencies continue throughout the album and make for a great departure from his previously folk-inflected albums. Not only does the musical style undergo a change but Buckley's vocals also feature a marked shift from his previous material. He is able to sing high, low, slow, fast, quiet and loud all on the same album and even within the same songs. His songwriting is much more polished than it was on Hello/Goodbye. The only song that I didn't think was great was "Dream Letter". While it fits the tone of the album to that point, the writing is clunkier than any other song. I'm a little surprised that "Buzzin' Fly" isn't more famous. It sounds like it should've been a hit. "Gypsy Woman" is the most impressive song, in my opinion. The stark arrangement in "Love Letter" is reminiscent of the style of his masterpiece, Lorca."  [+]  Reply

The harsh criticism is attributed to the myth, sexism or simply refusing to see beyond the YOKO FACTOR, in my opinion. She doesn't bring John's work down, is just a counterpart of his vision. This attitude is further reflected on the production. It's like something is about to happen, it slowly builds up, but it never comes to fruition, it stops the very last moment before it does, it simply doesn't bother any more. All of the above are closely related to the concept of the album and in that regard make more sense. It deals with the summer of 2006 - wow, how did you figure this out, amazing - and how it changed everything for the worse, it signified the loss of innocence ("Rounds up in that chamber, I'm a gangsta like my daddy My mama caused another problem when she had me They found another dead body in the alley They found another dead body in the alleyway Stacking paper, I'm a gangsta like my granny It's money over everything if you ask me They found another dead body in the alley They found another dead body in the alleyway I'm "stop-and-pop"-ing like a shooting guard My seat is back, I'm too relaxed, not moving out this car") and with it the loss of everything he loved ("My teachers told me we was slaves My mama told me we was kings I don't know who to listen to I guess we somewhere in between My feelings told me love is real But feelings known to get you killed I feel as if I'm misconstrued I spend my moments missin' you I'm searchin' for atonement Do I blame my darker tone? I don't think its on the level of Illinois but I also think its unreasonable to always compare an artist's output with their opus. As a piece of music in the grand design of Sufjan's world though, this album has delivered spectacularly. The way you can draw a thematic line between Carrie and Lowell and this album through everything he released between them is, I believe, the most underappreciated thing about Sufjan's discography. Its just sooo delicate, almost surgically precise.. and it has landed so beautifully, so theatrically on this excellent album. Its masterful. A fulfilled vision of an artist in complete control of his art. There is no one making music right now, who is in the same league as Sufjan. I don't mean that he's that good that no one can touch him (though he makes a solid case for it), but the way he has a handle on his career and his sound and the unhinged, unrestricted creative vision he displays.
