The original mono album comprises CD 1 while CD 2 is an exciting mix of singles, demos, outtakes and BBC liverecordings. The original album ought not require a detailed presentation, one can only affirm that it is one of the most important early Kinks albums; not least because of strong songs like "To the End of The Day", "I'm on an Island, "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" and "Ring the Bells" The same raw unpolished sound that characterizes the album is present on the contemporary single-tracks "Dedicated Follwer of Fashion," "Sitting On My Sofa" and "I'm Not Like Everubody Else" - all three well-known Kinks classics which are all included on CD 2 . "Mr. Reporter" was at a certain point considered for Dave Davies never released solo album, but here you have a fine version with Ray Davies as lead singer. Alternative versions of "Dedicated Follwer of Fashion" and "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" are found too - especially the former is very interesting. "Time Will Tell" is a nice out-take, which probably never got the final touch - could easily have fitted the original album. "And I Will Love You" is an unreleased EP number, which also sounds a little unfinished and sonically more would fit into "Kinda Kinks" "All Night Stand" is a demo of a fine little song that was never used for any release. Second half of the CD are BBC liverecordings, of which two have not been previously released. All in all a nice release, where the sound is definitely better than on most previously issued CD versions of the album."  [+]  Reply

"It's subdued, introspective, jazzy, perhaps even "sedate," almost a callback to the Beatnik Era, complete with the dingy 50's kitchen curtain and the stained coffee mug going cold on the side table as you chain-smoked Turkish cigarettes, the sort of album you probably wouldn't put on for your gir...""It's subdued, introspective, jazzy, perhaps even "sedate," almost a callback to the Beatnik Era, complete with the dingy 50's kitchen curtain and the stained coffee mug going cold on the side table as you chain-smoked Turkish cigarettes, the sort of album you probably wouldn't put on for your girlfriend but maybe, just maybe your girlfriend's friends while your girlfriend was out of town, a kind of stream-of-consciousness swaying-back-and-forth with theremins-not-theremins, horns and flutes, and you couldn't understand the lyrics because the singer's voice dripped with such pretentious affectation you almost couldn't distinguish it from yet another instrument, but above that there seemed to be an infinite sadness to it all, a feeling of resignation that didn't require understanding, just a realization that the universe is both infinite and infinitely empty, never to be truly comprehended. So basically, not a bad album if you're into this sort of thing."  [+]  Reply

That's the only way to describe it. Bruce Springsteen's 19th studio album 'Western stars' is quite probably the loveliest of his career. The musicianship is bliss and the production is immaculate. Opener 'Hitch hikin'' sets the tone for the album as we and Bruce thumb ourselves along the highways and byways of backwater USA. 'The Wayfarer', the second track, is really what this album is all about. A gorgeous track with orchestration that lifts the song to a beautiful crescendo reminiscent of old western movie theme tunes. Other standouts are the typically Bruce 'Tuscon train', the brooding 'Stones' and the excellent 'Chasin' wild horses'. The best though is saved for last. 'Moonlight motel' is quite possibly the most achingly beautiful song of Bruce's almost fifty year career. It's just wonderful. The album isn't perfect though.'Hello sunshine' is okay but it is one of the record's lesser moments and was a surprising choice for first single to be released from the LP. That probably should have gone to the enjoyable 'There goes my miracle', a rousing Bruce anthem. The weakest track though is the rather throwaway 'Sleepy Joe's cafe'. It's harmless but it's too lightweight and just slightly tarnishes the album for me. But these are small quibbles. Springsteen is still at the top of his game, still moving on and most importantly keeping us interested and excited about every release. A new E street band album is expected next year but for now this will do very nicely. "  [+]  Reply
