"Lionel had a dream ... he "had an A-W-E-S-O-M-E Dream". The title cut is so saccharine that dentists paid Richie royalties for all the dentures it caused. This is where Richie lost all credibility as anything more than a schlockmeister."  Reply

"This album makes me really angry. The whole concept of this music is to evoke the "primitive" lifestyles of the "savage" peoples of Africa. The title of the album, "Ritual of the Savage", exemplifies so perfectly Les Baxter's ignorance towards non-Western cultures. HOWEVER, this music is just so ..."  [+]  Reply

"There's not a bad song here; in fact there's not even a mediocre song here. But of course I'm biased since this is my favorite band. Anyhow, this isn't *quite* as good as their first album or their third album (Bloodletting), but still right up there. Criminally overlooked and ahead of their time."  Reply

"This is outrageously good. It keeps hovering near all these different genres but refusing to be sucked into them, instead drawing everything into its folky/droney/raga/psychedelic belly. The sound palette is gorgeous. It just goes all over the place. I linked this to a friend who described the op..."  [+]  Reply

"Stand by my girl was hysterical. Probably lyrically my favorite. The first 4 tracks had some really cool sounds to them from that whole 70s era sounds. Somehow this album didn't really take off for me. Like totally ok, not bad at all, but also nothing special."  Reply
