It's hard to pick just ten, but these are all essential:

4.

Curtis by Curtis Mayfield

5.

The Electric Lady by Janelle Monáe

6.

7.

Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye

8.

I'm Still In Love With You by Al Green

9.

Black Messiah by D'Angelo And The Vanguard

10.

Hot Damn! I'm excited for this thread. Thanks for all the voting so far. I want to comment on everyone's efforts, but would be afraid it'd become the seth show. Enjoy!

I did want to share this amazing live performance.

Fo Sho. Fantastic lists!

We already have 9 qualifiers for the semi-finalists. As such, semi-finalist voting will go until the 15th. If you want your albums to qualify, vote before then!

Also I just realized I'm likely the only person I know who truly loves funk music... thanks for joining me in the love of funk... well and soul/R&B.

I'm actually a big fan of singles, especially pre-1980s singles. It's like a special interest of mine. Not too sure why, but it is. I actually make singles charts. here at BEA and I enjoy it more than making album charts in a way. So I'm just going to go look at my 100 Greatest Singles chart and list the top 10 ones that come up. I'm pretty sure there's at least 10 that are soul R&B or funk.

1. Grazing in the Grass, by The Friends of Distinction (1969)
2. Spill the Wine, by War (1970)
3. Hot Fun in the Summertime, by Sly and the Family Stone 1970
4.. Spanish Harlem, by Aretha Franklin 1972
5. Backstabbers, by The O'Jays 1972
6. Higher Ground, by Stevie Wonder 1973
7. Someday We'll be Together, by Diana Ross and The Supremes 1969
8. That Lady, by The Isley Brothers 1973
9. It's a Shame, by The Spinners 1973
10. Love Train, by The O'Jays 1972

That's awesome. I've checked that chart before, it's cool.

While I love those, this one seemed shareworthy right now (love, love this song):

Can we determine if a genre is dead by seeing if folks at the genre olympics gravitate around a few classic albums rather than wildly different lists?

Confused

Yeah it was hard to pick the top Supremes single, but even though this one is kind of atypical for them, I still think it's their best. It probably should be higher than my number 7, probably should be number 2 or 3.
