Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.2/100, a mean average of 72.1/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.1/100. The standard deviation for this album is 11.3.

The Hip return with a more folksy affair and an album that could probably be considered their best of their 'late period' (post-2002). Even when the band sounds tired at times, Gord Downie proves that he is an ever-poignant and intelligent songwriter putting most other contemporaries to shame. Unlike the previous two albums where there are more than a handful of throwaway tracks, here the Hip have found a way to include memorable moments in the entire collection, but with no individual track immediately standing out.

Not their best, but still better than a lot of other bands.

Hip are still doing their thing - pumping out entirely listenable cottage rock that rolls, gets in your head, and surprises with clever lyrics and subtle hooks. But there's nothing distinguishable or memorable anymore. They know what they do, they produce predictable music at this point.

An album late in their career that still has beauty tracks in Coffee Girl and Morning Moon.
