Had no clue what to expect from this. A techno album from a former adult film actress of limited vocal ability does not sound very promising. And yet this is surprisingly well-produced, ahead of its time and incorporates ambient, trip hop and experimental elements to sometimes striking effect. Certain songs are very reminiscent of Madonna's acclaimed Ray of Light... only this was made years earlier.
First, the bad news. This album is harmed somewhat by a few disposable filler dance tracks as well as a throwaway closer that was recorded as a joke yet got tacked on at the very end. That much is skippable. The good news? The other songs are very good and, in a few instances, outstanding:
"Control" - Most people will probably recognize this. An instrumental version became the backbone for the multi-platinum-selling Mortal Kombat soundtrack.
"Fallen Angel" and "Fly" - Very well-constructed pop / dance / trance songs that are as good as anything else in this genre. "Say Something" is also decent and "Outlaw Lover" is catchy as hell despite the silly lyrics.
"Unknown Land" - This one's my favorite. It's trippy, haunting and extremely atmospheric. Perfect for your "I'm feeling reflective and just wanna chill out" playlist.
"Father's Field" - Lords recites passages from her own childhood diary about how an idyllic summer day turns into rape over trip hop beats. This is a disturbing yet powerful and surprisingly affecting song. I never expected something like this on this album.
Some people aren't going to be interested in this genre. Some people will never take Lords seriously because of who she is. And apparently most people haven't had much interest in this album as it wasn't even on here until I just added it. But I heartily recommend giving at least a couple of these songs a chance, particularly the last two I mentioned. You may be pleasantly surprised like I was.
