"What the hell was I doing there in that fast food parking lot?"
The Lov noing Kind is the seventeenth studio album by Nanci Griffith, released in 2009 on Rounder Records. The Loving Kind signals a shift to a hefty honky-tonk old school country music sound, way more "country" sounding than her MCA debut "Lone Star State of Mind" and its follow-up "Little Love Affairs." Those records were folk albums, touched up with contemporary Nashville production and marketed as commercial country albums. The Loving Kind is an odd honky tonk record with lyrics about specific social justice events (see Loving Kind and Not Innocent Enough).
The charm of Griffith's pop, with dashes of country but folk to its core, comes with heartfelt lyrics. The political touches, though unique, do not bring out the emotions of the listener, unless you streaming protest and justice songs regularly. The stories are nice, but the lyrics just don't snap and dazzle like the songs she consistently put out until the end of the century. Still, its an improvement over the rest of her 2000s material.

Gems: Up Against the Wind, Cotton's All We Got, Still Life
