Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.8/100, a mean average of 71.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 18.9.

Keep in mind that the release-year was 1995 . Progressive Death-Metal was literally invented by Opeth .
Five tracks that scratch or cross the 10-minute mark , beautiful melodies , terrific guitar-work .
Every band would be proud if they had created such a debut . Loved it then , love it still.

Spectacular debut. Still when it was mainly guttural vocals. Skilled musicians that can make tracks go off in all directions and tangents yet manage to hold it all together as one. Even at this early stage for them, they showed they were worthy of the crown of kings of true prog metal

Pretty much hate it due to the infernal growl/snarl which ruins all but one track:

Orchid- Sihouette- No growl/snarl.

As a prog soul who isn't too confortable with death metal, I must say that I find this album quite good and fun to listen. Both the harder and softer parts fit in well in most of the songs, with special mention to the 14 minute opener.

Hmm, interesting. I remember getting really interested in this band a decade and a half ago and this album was sorta considered one of 3 albums of theirs that were just all the buzz of metal. I remember really enjoying this record when I got it. It was the only album of theirs I got, and I was impressed with the complex arrangements and the dark experimentalism. It was BRUTAL but intellectual at the same time. Ill have to hear some of their stuff now after all these years and ill have to dig this up and give it another listen too. Interesting that its not even one of their new or most acclaimed albums now... I feel old.
