Top 100 Music Albums of the 1990s
by mrmcrook
The 90's was a fascinating decade. Grunge dominated the mainstream and became an added genre for those of us who mainly loved Metal and music of the heavier nature.
My list used to have a lot of compilations. There's still some in there but I'm trying to ween them out.
Any footnotes are just personal ramblings for my own entertainment.
And to remind me of the joy the music brings before all memory is erased.

94.58 This took a while before I realized just how fucking brilliant it is. Thought it alright at first but then some years later while listening to it something clicked. It's all due to when the internal frequencies within line up exactly to the external ones around us. Then....BOOM. Musical god is found

93.27* An ex had this on cassette. I listened to it a few times but was still pig headed in my metal phase to fully appreciate it at the time. Forward many years later when I let my tastes expand and I got a copy of my own. They have a sound all of there own and became an all time favorite. Got better every time I heard it and still does to this day. Track list on this is different to the original copy I have ('Choppers,' & 'Mr Moon', both being two of the better songs missing.)

93.18 I'd never even heard of these guys prior to coming onto this site. Being rated so high I gave it a listen on Spotify, thought it was alright and managed to track myself down a copy. It took a few listens before it fully clicked with me as I initially found the vocals a tad grating. Now I find it very addictive and have it on high rotation.
The sequencing and seguing from one song to the next is total perfection. An absolute true gem of an album. [First added to this chart: 06/09/2021]

93.00 The interesting thing with this album is that there's nothing that's specifically unique or different than other albums from this genre. Nothing that really sets it apart in some original way.
Yet it's so fucking brilliant. The melody, vocals, song structure of every song on this makes it one of the best albums from this era. Outstanding and it deserves more recognition than it gets. [First added to this chart: 10/21/2020]

91.53* My favorite Nirvana album. Even though it's categorized as a compilation I don't consider it to be. All songs on this are fucking fantastic. No commercial shine. I don't even label this as grunge. Most of this is great rock n roll.

90.22* Got this as a 2 for 1 package with 'Nothing's Shocking'. Didn't mind it but wasn't gelling with the whole alternative buzz at the time so didn't listen to it much. Fast forward 15 years when I pulled it out for a listen. My tastes had expanded by then and it was like being hit by a bolt of audible lightning. Loved it, couldn't get enough of it and it became one of my favorites and put on high rotation. All hail the Addiction

89.44 Megadeth's magnum opus. Easily the best album they've put out. One thing I'm adverse to with Megadeth is Dave Mustaine's voice. I honestly don't think he can sing for shit. But with this album it all comes together and he pulls it off well. 01/24

88.75 So much debate over this album within the 'true metal community' on the merit of it. It became commercial, it introduced a whole new audience to metal, it wasn't as ferocious as there previous work. So because Metallica seemed to of sold out, the hardcore metalers dismissed it. But this is a stone cold great hard rock/metal album. All killer, no filler. Some of the tracks are up there with the best they've done. Worthy of it's place in history, the metal album that woke the musical drones up. Bob Rock sprinkled his production fairy dust on it. The only thing I can fault with this is that it can sound a bit too polished. 03/24

88.33* Great songwriting. Top sequencing with no filler. Any of the tracks on this could have been pushed as singles. This is quite a masterpiece in its own right.

88.09* A massively overlooked album. Every song on this is superb. It's one that I always question about being so high in my charts, but then I listen to it and understand why it's there. Title track can bring a tear to the eye.

I always enjoy a chart that's different from mine, versatile, and favors personal subjective choices over "pop" orientation. Good stuff.

I agree with a lot of what you say. The value of compilations, how good Dopes To Infinty is (even if it is not in my decade chart t hods a respectable position in my yearly chart), and I had the same experience with NMH including first hearing of them through BEA....and I need to get around to a Headless Chickens album - heard a lot of their songs over the years and Gaskrankenstation is an all time favourite

This is a unique and very interesting chart. While I haven't included many compilations or live albums on my own charts, your rationale for doing so makes sense. Lots of stuff here I've never heard before, so I'm looking forward to sampling some of your selections that are less familiar to me, starting with your #1 pick.
