I appreciate experimentation and weirdness. Most of this, however, just comes off as pretentious to me.

Abrasive and weird. In a very good way.
Really disappointing album. Just a bunch of formless, fairly sub-par experimental music.
Not nearly as good as STGSTV or Campfire Right after it...or any AnCo, for that matter...
Way too much lofi noise, too many sounds past 7000 Hz, too many odd moan/syncopated sounds, it really is the perfect headache album. Huge bummer for AnCo, but at least it's interesting...
Best: Essplode (really, the only track worth listening here)
Worst: Everything else...

I dont think this is as strong as their Spirit They're Gone right before it.
couldn't give it a full listen. honestly didn't see the point.
There is no way a monkey could ever type Hamlet, but I am pretty sure a monkey or at the very least a group of monkeys could create a similar album to Animal Collective's Danse Manatee.
Okay that was a joke and it was a bit harsh. I mean I must have some reasoning behind the fact that I gave this album a score above zero. My reasoning is this; Danse Manatee technically qualifies as music because it is organized sound. The songs on this album qualify as songs because each one has some sort of rhythm, melody, and harmony. Other than that this album is a primitive collection of scattered songs that don't have much to offer other than random interesting sounds. If you know Animal Collective and you're wondering how the hell anyone could ever give an Animal Collective album a bad review. Well you will just have to listen to Danse Manatee. Maybe then you will agree with me.
