Another excellent album from the pride of Etobicoke. They became critical darlings because their catalog contains intelligent, varied songs that continually reward persistent listeners -- this album being a great example.

Voted one of the ten greatest Canadian albums ever in a mid-00s Canadian critics poll (along with the Rheostatics' immediate prior album "Melville"), Whale Music" was a great transitional album. Stretching out from a folk-rock base full of vocal harmonies from their three songwriters (a poet, a bratty storyteller, a friendly protest singer), it saw them tinkering with unexpected rhythms, song structures, and other-genre borrowings. It was a little less wild, a little more normal, a little less gleefully unhinged than they'd later become, it was nonetheless an extremely smart, amiable, quirky, empathetic, and unpredictable album.

The most listenable of the Rheostatics... Somehow these guys became critical darlings in Canada. They were OK, but not standing above their peers. Decent alt-rock from the early 90s.
