The Canadian 100
by jhuik

This list comes from a massive fan of Canadian music. It is influenced by Bob Mersereau's book, by a list pulled from this site (as well as Junodog's similar list), some of my own overrides with a few grudging picks out of respect for tradition and influence. This is a work in progress and I will listen to suggestions. Please leave a comment and I will answer the comments and take your suggestions to heart. Please do not give this a bad rating because I missed something you think belongs here... just comment instead.

I love about half of these artists, but I was a little disappointed not to see some of my old favorites like Rough Trade, the Kings, Martha and the muffins, Buffy sainte-marie, not to mention a lot more OLP, Gordon Lightfoot, better Joni Mitchell albums, BUT I got very excited to see 54-40, pursuit of happiness, Sloan, Teenage Head. That was awesome!!!!

@Decurso Agreed. But I don't really care for any of those bands much myself. You can always make your own once you reach Level 7.

A lot of artists I genuinely dislike (Rush, Sarah McLaghlan, Bryan Adams, Bruce Cockburn)on here, unfortunately. I suppose it's a pretty representative list as far as popular/influential Canadian albums, but it would be nice to see some more obscure stuff (D.O.A., Fucked Up, NoMeansNo, etc.)

I include Avril Lavigne mainly because my daughters liked her and I could connect with them over music that was kind of rock and roll. Ok... she's actually a guilty pleasure really. She really made a couple of decent albums... and if Bryan Adams can find a spot so can Avril.

Up to Here at #2 and 4 Tragically Hip albums ... cool. They are clearly an under-appreciated entity on BEA.

Awesome chart!

It gives a nice patriotic feeling to scan through and see how important Canada's place has been in popular music over the last 45 or so years - not to mention our current indie influence with acts like Grimes, Japandroids, etc.

Oh, and nice job slipping Spirit of the West into your top 70...

Keep the great charts coming!
