Sirenia were a logical next step after Tristania further developed the gothic/symphonic metal fusion that bands like Within Temptation experimented with in the mid 90s. Perhaps the best album in that vein since Within Temptation's debut.
One thing about Sirenia is that they are generally tasteful and know when to hold back; they rarely go over the top and into power metal territories. Contrast this with Epica, who I feel go a little too over the top at times.
