Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 67.3/100, a mean average of 64.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 64.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 21.0.

After a few listens, I went from lukewarm about this album to loving it. It's a very interesting sounding record because it sounds slightly new age-y from the synths on the first tracks, but then it morphs into this abstract-feeling jazz funk record toward the end. Each track is sonically unique from the other, but as a whole it's cohesive. I know that has been said about a lot of albums, but this one definitely has variety amongst the track selection. I feel like Herbie Hancock can take each track from this album and craft a new album based off the sounds from that particular track and each album would sound notably different. There isn't a climactic moment on this record, but that's fine because it makes it feel all the more like an abstract dream. In reality, dreams never really have a singular climax like the movies do (well, at least mine don't). They always feel like a sequence of particular events that seem somewhat random, but the work well together in the dream. That's exactly what this album does. Idk, I think I am just fascinated with how disjointed yet cohesive the track listing is. It's all sonically pleasant as well. If what I wrote doesn't make sense, hopefully a listen will clarify things for you.

I guess the synths put people off, but this is album is filled with complex, imaginative compositions and great playing throughout, from people like Jaco, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, the Headhunters band, even Sheila E plays percussion on a couple of tracks. Mainly it showcases Herbie's own playing, though, which is always nothing less than dazzling.
