Really cool sound; where Spoon figures it out and really runs with it. However, I still think they get more memorable after this.

This is an album I first listened to only retrospectively, after hearing Gimme Fiction and wondering what else they'd done. Normally I tend to fall in love with the first album I hear by an artist, but this one is an exception. I love the sound of this album: the simplicity of the beats, the cleanness of the production, the grooviness of the melodies. "The Way We Get By" is the highlight on an album filled with highlights.

I can't really get into early Spoon. Rating are high but I don't find them to be that good until they release Gimme Fiction and then from there they take off.

I guess its smart indie music. I just like later Spoon better

Gimme Fiction, Ga Ga Ga, and Transference is quite a run

Great album, very underrated on this site. Not even in the top 1000? Crazy

Great album, surprised it is so low in the rankings. It kind of slows down at the end but the first half holds up well, particulary "small stakes", "way we get by" and "jonathan fisk". Spoon is truly one of the most underrated bands ever.

This is the album where Spoon really broke through. Jonathan Fisk is a great centerpiece. With this and their following troika, Spoon completely forgot how to make forgettable songs.

The catchiness is unrelenting, one of a core of indie-popsters that have perfected the catchy indie-pop song (along with new porn). From the urgency of dope-smokin'-endorsin' "the way we get by" ("We go out in stormy weather / We rarely practice discern / We make love to Some Weird Sin / We seek out the taciturn") to the beat-boxing of "stay don't go" to the chugging guitar of "jonathan fisk" to the vacuumous & drumstick-backboned "paper tiger" to the inter-flitting piano of "don't let it get you down", you'll be humming along or toe-tapping in moments. The lyrics are minimal and more used for feeling and rhyme structure, like opener "small stakes": "small stakes ensure you the minimum blues / but you don't feel taken and you don't feel abused".

From Runaway
an album that surprised me. The first four songs are the most impressive.
