Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 12% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 74.5/100, a mean average of 75.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 75.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 9.2.

First off, I don't know if I would classify the artist here as Charles Mingus. While he composed it, it's definitely credited to "Mingus Big Band". And it's just that. I don't know if Mingus intended this to sound so much like swing/big band jazz. The modern sensibilities ring true but I think this performance leaves a lot to be desired.

This seems to be a masterwork of composing. I think with the right conductor/bandleader, this could be recognized as Mingus' magnum opus. Either way, amazing listen. Fans of Mingus will recognize bits and pieces here and there

No comments for Mingus' masterwork is pretty disappointing...

It definitely leans toward the academic side of things, and you'll find your interest waxing and waning...but the last third in particular, starting with "The Children's Hour Of Dream", is remarkable, maybe even arresting.

I can't deny that it would probably have been rendered more powerful if it were successfully recorded in the 60's with Mingus and Dolphy at full strength, with that red-hot sound they had going for them...and perhaps it would have been were it not for Dolphy's unfortunate death. There are glimpses of Epitaph to be found on some of his early 60's recordings that at least hint at the possibilities. I suppose we'll never know.
