This album is pretty good, maybe a little long, but I would say it is almost the same level as American Idiot.
BEA ranked 5 best Green Day album kinda sums this album up. Barely ok but not great. 21st CENTURY BREAKDOWN and KNOW YOUR ENEMY are the best 2 tracks here, unfortunately there isn’t much else. Green Day should have combined the best of American Idiot and the best of 21st Century to make the one album for the ages. Missed opportunity IMO
Seemingly an attempt to recreate American Idiot, the album falls flat in comparison in every way (and I'm not a huge fan of American Idiot either). To me, this album was the obvious start of Green Day's fall from grace.
Most of it feels like American Idiot Leftovers
How could Green Day manage a very well album after the breakout American Idiot? The answers are simple, firstly they rocked as **** showing its angriness and powerfulness (Horseshoes and Handgrenades, Murder City, Know Your Enemy) that they ever had, secondly melodically it's even kind of better than American Idiot (21 Guns, The Static Age) and finally the piano sounded terrific (Restless Heart Syndrome, Viva la Gloria!) The reason why I didn't give them 100% were lyrically (because it was a bit confused)
THE BEST ALBUM OF MY ADOLESCENCE!
American Idiot was a punk rock opera about politics
21st Century is a punk rock opera about love
Not nearly as novel as American Idiot, this feels pretty forced and heavy handed.
It just sounds like a re-hashed attempt at American Idiot.
The lyrics are much worse here even if the music is more varied.
Probably gets more flack than it deserves because American Idiot was so good and this is such an obvious attempt at replicating the scope and size of that gem.
It's still pretty good, borderline 4 out of 5 stars and still wayyyyy better than the ridiculously overrated mindless stoner skater Dookie
Underrated album. They tried to do a little too much with this one. Idiot was a concept album, but it was still accessible to the simple punk crowd. This is a straight-up concept album that is a bit too long. Side 1 is pretty good, side 2 is total crap, side 3 is alright, and 4 kicks ass. Far from flawless, but the lyrics are pretty great on most tracks, the highlight being Mass Hysteria.
Kind of like a sequel to American Idiot, not quite as good but still has that same sort of ambition!
American idiots retarded little step-brother who listened to way to many Anti-Flag albums and watched west side story way too many times. Golden record though. Ballad after ballad after ballad. Absolutely as in love with this record today as i was when i was 10 and i had to have my mom buy it for me because the walmart guy wouldnt let me buy something with a parental advisory sticker on it. Like a dog thats been sodomized.
This was definitely where my affinity for Green Day ended. This isn't a particularly good album. There are a lot of really good songs, but they don't serve each other particularly well. As ambitious as it is, it's mostly a redundant, overstuffed mess.
