I remember I was disappointed when I listened to it for the first time - although (or because) I liked the earlier albums very much. This one grew on me almost everytime I listened to it, and pretty soon it became my favourite Doves album.
It is a pity that it still is the last record they released.
Another really consistent album by Doves. Their fourth album and to me it's still at the same standard of the previous three. Winter Hill is a beautiful song, it;s one of my favourites in the last few months. Jimi Goodwin's voice is still unique and brilliant, and the instrumentals are arguably even better than their other albums. No weak tracks. I wish they hadn't taken an 11 year hiatus after this as they were on a roll.
About two thirds of it is excellent, but the other third, with one song in particular is really disappointing. Still, it's alright on the whole. Is this the last Doves album?
Their weakest album but still got some quality songs on there, don't know about the slap bass on Compulsion though!
I respectfully disagree with jamessmith77... I say this is Doves best work.
