Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.7/100, a mean average of 71.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.6/100. The standard deviation for this album is 13.8.

A solid album. There are some good songs like "Closer" (by far the best on the album), "Selfish Jean", "My Eyes" and "Under The Moonlight" the rest is not bad, but it's the same kind of songs that Travis has been doing for years.
As a life long music fan my all time favourite bands are some of the classics: Pixies, R.E.M, The Beatles, The Doors, Midnight Oil (I’m Aussie) and a bunch of down to earth lads from Glasgow Travis. Something about their albums and music that keeps drawing me back and back and back.
Here we have one of those terrible situations whereby a well known music publication who shall remain nameless (N.M.E) unfairly slaughters an artist and album effectively killing it dead in the water by giving ‘The Boy With No Name’ a pitiful 2/10 score. Completely brutal and unwarranted. Lets list out the tracks here that are really good
- “ 3 Times And You Lose”
- “Selfish Jean”
- “Eyes Wide Open”
- “My Eyes”
- “One Night”
Fan boy or not this is simply an awesome album
Had the album for a few years without listening too closely to it - more tuned into The Man Who. But you know what this is an excellent little album of great if somewhat poppy songs throughout. So much to enjoy here.
Favoritas: Closer, Selfish Jean, 3 Times You Lose
Good album, listenable and some great songs.
I remember an extremely harsh review for this in NME! A lot better than listening to a supermarket till though. In fact the first song on here is incredible and breaks a Travis tradition of having the singles far outweigh the album tracks. Closer was a nice song though but nothing exciting. They did slip a little with this release.
