Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 67.1/100, a mean average of 64.5/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 64.5/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.1.

Songs on Much Afraid harken back to love and beauty and the absence in my own life, straight on from opener "overjoyed" ("love is the thing i know for sure / and i couldn't need you more now") which is about needing god and god's love in one's life, but is written in a way to apply to other nuances of love in other subjective arenas. I adore the soft, heartfelt plucking at the beginning of "frail"; the light soaring of strings, the building anticipation of a story already being sung through instrumentation, the calm before the flood of emotions. Then "a rose could never lie about the love it brings / and i could never promise to be any of those things" hits me hard, followed by "if i was not so weak / if i not was so cold / if i was not so scared of being broke and growing old / i would be". The lyrics are brief but powerful, especially with the slowing building and ebbing soaring background which ease into a 3 minute instrumental as delicate and heart-tugging as the intro crashing with cymbal-weight near the very end.
