Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some artists can have several thousand ratings)
This artist is rated in the top 1% of all artists on BestEverAlbums.com. This artist has a Bayesian average rating of 87.5/100, a mean average of 86.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 87.9/100. The standard deviation for this artist is 14.8.

Hendrix, my god!
influential, but overrated...I never really got into his stuff, like zeppelin back in teh day
His three studio releases are all masterpieces, they redefined what an electric guitar could do, as well as a funky live record. Then, he passed away. The reason his death was so tragic was because he had so much more music left in him. Just listening to the tracks he was recording before he died, I think about what could have been.
He was the first guitar man who invented the excessive use of distortion

Plain and simple, the best rock guitarist of all time. He could play any style well. Innovative, and with a passion unparalleled. Three superb albums in Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland and Axis: Bold As love.

Says it all, eh?
Why isn't "purple haze" or "hey joe" on the best track list? Can someone add those to this site?
