From "Gimme shelter"s ominous intro to the last fading notes of "You can't always get what you want", this, along with the Beatles' "Abbey Road", is the sound of the 1960s, and with them a whole era, coming to an end.

While still delivering the goods, the Stones had lost a little of their, let's say, vitality after "Exile...". Here, endangered by punk and disco, is where they found it again.

Trawling through their archives of the past decade, finishing some stuff, recording a couple of new tracks, the Stones come up with what may well be their last great album. In two halves: one up-tempo, one comprising ballads.
