The idea shouldn't make sense: two smaller albums in one normal length album. And yet its pulled off with brilliant tenacity. The opening side, "Hounds Of Love", is Bush's chance to explore pop in its most conventional form. Hints of previous albums can be found here, but it is most certainly new. From its superb opener to the emotion-packed vocals of its title track and on to the mesmerising, fantastic "Cloudbusting", it never loses pace once and builds you up for that mini-finale so, so well. The second half, "The Ninth Wave", demands your fullest attention; "And Dream of Sheep" lulls you into its aura of sound, and hooks you into its story. From there, Bush experiments with conveying feelings and narrative through sound, such as with the sharp, jabbing sounds of "Under Ice" to the distant loneliness of the vocals in "Hello Earth". It's a truly magical experience. The most amazing accomplishment of "Hounds of Love" is just how much is crammed into its 47 minute run time. Yet it is flawless in its delivery and composition, and you cannot help but feeling utterly compelled by its sound and story. And yes, I can see where the hate is coming from. But every time I listen to this album, I completely forget the constant lashings that the members here give this album. For one, the production work of Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno is absolutely stellar. This record just sounds fantastic. Not only that, the album is filled to the brim with a staggering amount of emotion. Tracks like "Running to Stand Still" make me just want to sit down and cry. Bono puts so much emotion into his vocals, it is amazing the emotion he can convey at times. The Edge's guitar work is fantastic, too. It sounds dreamy, and his riffs really add a lot to the album. U2 are very tight playing wise. Every one of these tracks are just great, not a single bad one. I love this album, and I feel that no one here can change that."  [+]  Reply

I had first heard of Arcade Fire when the Rolling Stone's list of top songs of 2003 came out and heard Wake Up. It was a pretty good song but they seemed a little too out of left field for my liking. Didn't really look into them more. Then a couple years ago, I was listening to the indie station on Sirius and heard multiple Arcade Fire songs and remembered them from a few years prior and I remember thinking wow, this is more to my liking. There was more of a rock sound to them and the thing that captured me most about this album is the theme. To me, Neon Bible is by far their most loaded album touching on religion, overbearing parents, media, etc. This album takes a step back in seriousness and a step forward in genuity. The Suburbs and many others on this album are melancholy songs because they make you realize how wrapped up in technology we are and how we don't embrace small things as much as we used to. My favorite class in college was History of the American City and a lot of things we discussed in that class are on the album. The isolation that comes with living in suburbs, how youth is protected from harrowing things that maybe inner city kids are exposed to younger and even how relatonships are based on what music you listen to and stuff. I like Arcade Fire a lot because they are all early 30's so it's like they've made that transition to adulthood but it's not far away from their youth and that duality reflects in the songs. It might not be a perfect album, to me Sprawl I is a throwaway track and Rococo is pretty mediocre, but the rest of this album is phenomonal and if you're a fan of music, definitely check this album out. This could very well be the defining album of Generation Y. OK Computer is probably the 90's version of this album. It is good in terms of the concept album but the idea of isolation from each other, impact of technology, and leaving youth to go to adulthood is much more fully realized on this album than OK Computer."  [+]  Reply

So much soul and passion put into this album that took more than 2 years to be released. I was lucky enough to see him play it live in its entirety and I was given an entirely new view on this beautiful work of art. And as I type this, I have it spinning on the turntable. Sparse, intimate, and voice-driven are some of them. And all three of them describe this album perfectly - as others have said, it is the sound of an artist laying their life bare with songs reflecting over their experiences. But somehow, in this case, it all comes together and creates what I believe to be the most perfect album ever crafted. It's one thing to have a great voice, and it's quite another to be able to use that voice and make it sound honest. If there's one word that describes (nearly) all of the music I enjoy it's honest. And if someone is clearing trying to hit high notes and sing in key that honesty is lost; that's why I often prefer bad singers to good ones. But Joni makes hitting the high notes sound incredibly effortless, and she integrates them perfectly into the rest of the song so that they don't stand out as if she's trying to impress with her voice. It's an album that is so well crafted that the voice is irrelevant, but she still manages to sing perfectly. And the song-writing - the stream-of-consciousness style she writes in is just tremendous. Picture Kurt Cobain if the thoughts in his head actually made sense. There is no pretense, there is no thought. These are the things she is thinking, and she's not manipulating them to sound like poetry. There are moments on this record that are incredibly general and could apply to anyone, and there are moments where the specificity is brilliant ("Richard got married to a figure skater, and he bought her a dishwasher and a coffee percolator"). The songs reflect the era she lived in (Little Green / Blue) and her dreams for the future (River). Even when the lyrics blend into a more manufactured poetry they sound so heartbreakingly beautiful you can't fault it (Case of You). And of course there's a central theme that ties things together nicely - it wouldn't be a true album if the songs didn't feel like they belonged together. Not only is there the general sentiment of heartbreak that is described by colors (Blue and Green, obviously), but each song seems to dwell on a different aspect of the feeling (or the moments leading up to it). The songs also progress nicely, starting off hopeful and glad and then straying into sadness, depression, and what I wouldn't hesitate to call despair. It starts with hopes and dreams (the dream theme culminates in Carey and California) but by the end the illusion is shattered and the truths about love and life come out. My love for this album goes even beyond words, but somehow it's the one I find the most to say about and the most to discover more in. The number of times I've broken down sobbing to this album is not a single digit number."  [+]  Reply
