- don't understand the lukewarm reaction to this one whatsoever - seems to me that this is four tet doing four tet, and doing it very well, albeit in longform this time around. a couple of bollywood-inspired, ambient techno tracks, centred around times of the day - what more could you ask for? although arguably lightweight, these songs are often achingly gorgeous, consisting of little more than straightforward (albeit quiet) pitter-patter percussion patterns, hazy synth chords, and lightly treated indian vocals, acting almost as the light, summery, countrified yin counterpoint to frequent collaborator burial's recent dark, industrial yang longer works. there's no point in trying to figure out if this is an improvement on 2013's beautiful rewind, a rough'n'ready, all-over-the-place tribute to pirate radio, as it's a complete sideways step, moving away from the shorter pieces and into something more substantial, less sketchy and more fleshed out, but equally beguiling. he's simply operating at a higher level than most anybody else in electronic listening music at the moment, and it's lovely to see him still so inspired at this stage of his career.

- a gnarly bass&drum duo who put together disjointed, slightly angular, very heavy doom metal that calls to mind early '90s melvins. they really play with the idea of space in music well - songs can jump from feeling big and open and full of interesting holes to feeling completely filled up, as though submerged and subject to sound pouring into every pore - and they structure their songs in a way that feels unpredictable, leaving me constantly excited to see where they take things next. despite the stylistic variation throughout, there's also something rather unrelenting about this release, not in the sense that it constantly pummels me, but in that its winding heaviness gets a little exhausting, though in a very good way. one of my favourite metal releases of the year, available on ritual sacrifice (home to the likes of bong and 11paranoias).

- q: are bong the best band operating in britain right now? a: yes, clearly. moving away from the relentless, claustrophobia-inducing, smokey, one-note haze of last year's ridiculously great stoner rock, bong revisit to mellower, more meditational vibe of 2012's mana yood sushai, albeit perhaps even gentler than that, stripping away all the metal and leaving just the gorgeous, oceanic drone. the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist, and whilst bong's complexity may be initially non-existent, there's actually a great deal of depth to these long, if breezy, passages, with faraway wiccan drums pounding like jumanji's calling, eastern strings lolling calmly in the background, and subtle tonal changes creating a trance-like vibe as bong search for that timeless, 'suspended in mid air' feeling that debussy and messiaen were so adept at achieving. i could see why the hippie, pre-religion air that their heavy-handed vocal passages bring about could turn some people off, but i find it utterly charming, harking back consciously or otherwise to hawkwind's warrior on the edge of time. in terms of consistency and invention, bong are the best band (in the traditional guitar/bass/drums/vocals sense) in the uk at the moment, and they're showing little sign of letting up.

- my favourite fabriclive in a long, long time. mumdance's mix draws a line straight through dark ambient and drone, his own weightless take on grime, uk funky and other bass music, back to the uk hardcore music that spawned it all. it's a constantly evolving mix that feels largely seamless, showing the sort of versatility and variation of influence that has lead to his rise as one of the uk's best young electronic music producers.

- mumdance and logos take their hyperclean, minimal vibe, with which they've both been producing excellent grime music over the past couple of years, and reapply it to a uk hardcore template, managing to balance the energy and innocent exploration of that era with a scientific sheen, creating something unique that is as suited to at-home listening as it is for dancing like a lunatic to. repetition with subtle changes seem to be the order of the day here, and whilst i was initially a little disappointed at the lack of, well, much of anything here, over the course of the year i've returned to this record time and time again in order to revel in its undoubted energy. as a sonic throwback wearing a 2015 coat, this album feels vital.

- can get a little preachy at times, but it's just refreshing to see a grime rapper actually release an album of grime music with no pandering to "the mainstream" (whatever that means these days) with awkward crossover attempts. could definitely do without being constantly told that eating meat and smoking is bad for me, though, but jme's always cleverly walked a line between scary rudeboy and total geek, and he continues to do so here in a very charming way. all gravy.

Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.0/100, a mean average of 95.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 95.6/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 6.4.

I need to look cool in front of my school homies, I guess any album off here will crush 'em all in the fly factor apart from summoning Kazaam from a magic lamp.

Yeah again a thing of towering beauty, actually have more in common than usual but that makes sense cause I pretty much glean (COUGH*STEAL*COUGH) the best recs of the year from this very chart.

even better than before. that top 20 is incredible. Love seeing Shilpa Ray up there.

I'd like to rec:
The Great Void - Shift Age (Sisters of Mercy meets Georgio Moroder)
Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni ba - Ba Power (Mali music at its best)
Steve Gunn & The Black Twig Pickers - Seasonal Hire (Apalachian folk with a little Fahey)
Family Dynamics - Service (fuck if I know how to classify this. experimental, hypnotic, seance)

When I grow up, I want to be skinny.

Not enough I've heard on here to rate yet, which basically just means I have some listening to do. Only just saw your rec of NOMAD, I'm gonna check it out after the thing I'm listening to right now.

As far as what you might like, definitely check out L'Orange's collab with Kool Keith, lyrically a bit weak at times but the flow is awesome and L'Orange's heavy use of samples works really well here. The only other thing I can think of that you might have missed is Zun Zun Egui's album from this year, Shackles Gift, which has a certain feel to it that reminds me of some of the electronic stuff you listen to. I was really a fan, it seems to have gotten pretty mixed reviews.

Pretty disappointed not to find Drones or The Magic Whip on here. Interesting list though. I have no idea how you find the time to listen to 100 albums in 8 months.

hey man. hope you're doing good. yeah i liked them both a lot, with beast mode and monster just behind them in terms of fewtch's post honest releases. i listen to 56 nights a lot more because it's shorter though, DS2 can be a bit of a struggle. also never really copped, but that 1, 2 is amazing tbh.

also everytime i look at this chart i dl the jenny hval album lol and always forget to listen and end up downloading again. will listen and report back though.
