Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).

Love this chart. So many albums that we have in common. Great selections. Even the albums I haven't heard, I have heard of the bands, and I have heard good things about them.
Excellent work, though I would love to see you describe why you chose these albums!

Sometimes I feel that musi. Should have stopped after a certain decade. Then I realise that I would have missed music by Mogwai, Aidan Moffatt, Pictish Trail and the Sexual Objects. It is certainly worth listening out for new music no matter how old you are. Yes, you will find a lot of rubbish, a lot of copyists and a lot of records that are just too 'new' for an old brain to be comfortable with, but you will find something that makes your heart race with joy.
As for your chart, it has some good albums, but too many prog albums.
