In a way, that was a blessing in disguise, as it leaves us with a classic album full of fantastic songs. Who's next, had a strut and swagger about, it's obvious the band are full of confidence after the success of, Tommy, and the, live at leeds, albums, and, who's next, whether it's your favourite Who album or not, it is the band's best, and all the members are at the top of their game. Opener, Baba O'Reilly, is one of The Who's most anthemic tracks, a fantastic song, and, bargain, is a great bluesy rock number. Love ain't for keeping, has a slight country rock feel, and John Entwistle contributes one of his best songs to the band with the darkly funny, my wife. Getting in tune, and, the epic, the song is over, are two excellent album tracks, while, behind blue eyes, is another classic Who moment. If there is a weak track it's probably the road anthem, going mobile, but this excellent album ends with one of the band's greatest songs. Won't get fooled again, is The Who at their brilliant best, an epic eight minute closing track, superb. Who's next, is one of the great all time rock albums, and it's probably for the best that Townshend didn't finish, lifehouse, as it might have ended up as bloated and overblown and the great songs here may have been lost in all the over ambition, as it is we are left with a tight and coherent record, a true rock classic. It's an album almost synonymous with maturity and the absolute expression of all the nuances of love and loss. It's an album that I notice I love more and more as my life ticks along. When I first heard it at the age of 12 I didn't get it. I didn't see what was so great about it. And even now to this day, I feel their is a more relatable feeling I get from his 60s music. I am 24 years old as I write this. Dylan was 21 and 24 when he made my other 2 favorite albums of his. Is that all it comes down to? Perhaps. As for this album, well it's a legendary piece of art. It transcends my amateur description. There are just so many themes and details and emotions that are expressed here. The album is a roller coaster, it takes you through all the highs of love found and all the lows of regret. And in the end you leave this record wiser than when you entered. To name the highlights is basically to name off every track. It's literally that great. The songs that just absolutely gut me every time I hear them are "Simple Twist of Fate" (perhaps one of the most sobering songs ever), "You're A Big Girl Now", "Meet Me In The Morning" (so simple and beautiful and the fucking steel guitar and slide guitar at the end is pure aesthetic perfection), "Shelter From The Storm", and the closer "Buckets of Rain". Oh and about this closer...it's perfect. I use that word "perfect" too much, I know. But this song AS A CLOSER is perfection. It's like a little nugget of almost simpleton-level wisdom that floats in and soothes us after the emotional journey of the rest of the album that just ended. It's so damn simple and playful and REAL. This album feels so absolutely relaxed and natural. It's a grand example of the plain expression of very exact and thought-out art. It's an album that opens up more and more not only with each listen but also with each passing year of living. It's an album that is always there to help get me through. Thanks, Bob. I can confirm that their fried ch...""After years of hearing about Weaver D's--the Athens, Georgia, soul food eatery that spawned the catchphrase that R.E.M. borrowed for the title of this album--I finally had a chance to visit there in 2013, just a few months before they closed their doors for good. I can confirm that their fried chicken and black-eyed peas were second to none, and I also can confirm that Dexter Weaver did indeed respond, "Automatic," when he took my order. As for the album that the members of R.E.M. created in honor of this Georgia institution, it's one of the band's best, and that's saying something. It's quite a bit more accessible, more radio friendly, than a lot of their work from the eighties, but still as lyrically oblique as ever. My favorite track, "Find the River," uses the song's namesake river as a metaphor for the kind of artistic seeking that has marked the band's whole career: "I have got to find the river / Bergamot and vetiver / Run through my head and fall away." A great summary of the place R.E.M.'s music has had in my life ever since I first heard them in the mid-eighties."  [+]  Reply

Flying high in the friendly sky” What do you get when you combine the smoothest voice in the history of music with the greatest bass lines in the history of music, and hotbox a Motown studio full of marijuana? An album that is better than anything in its genre and in its decade - which is saying a lot when you consider all that happened in the 1970’s. If heroin could sing, it still wouldn’t sound as good as Marvin Gaye. I stand very firmly behind my opinion that Marvin Gaye possessed the greatest voice of all time. There are countless things to love about this album musically, the tight bass lines, the smooth aesthetic, the jazz feel, liberal use of assorted wind and stringed instruments, and the variety of percussion the crystal clear production that sounds as incredible in 2015 as it did in 1971. However, it’s Marvin’s show, and it’s his voice that carries the listener through the album. The man clearly had enormous talent, and it is displayed in its entirety on “What’s Going On”. Listening to Marvin Gaye perform live was akin to watching Michael Jordan make the final shot of the 1998 NBA finals, except better by several orders of magnitude because music is clearly a domain of excellence far superior to sports. One of his studio assistants was questioned at one point what the most difficult thing was when working with Marvin Gaye. The response was that it was so difficult to select which takes of his voice to keep and which to discard, because they were all so beautiful that it felt wrong to delete anything that he recorded. “What’s Going On” is about discontent - with culture, with politics, with discrimination, with the imperfect self. It came at a time when the Barry Gordy’s Motown record label was interested only in pumping out radio hits for profit and wasn’t interested in any of this introspective, challenging music. Gaye demanded it be released as he envisioned it and was nearly close to breaking ties with the record label. Marvin Gaye had a wild and remarkable career, plagued by the internal conflict which is was clear from his art, as well as his ongoing struggle with depression and multiple suicide attempts and drug addiction. It’s this struggle that fuels the beauty that is his music. His angelic voice carries just enough of a painful undertone to send shivers down the listener’s spine. I had first heard of Arcade Fire when the Rolling Stone's list of top songs of 2003 came out and heard Wake Up. It was a pretty good song but they seemed a little too out of left field for my liking. Didn't really look into them more. Then a couple years ago, I was listening to the indie station on Sirius and heard multiple Arcade Fire songs and remembered them from a few years prior and I remember thinking wow, this is more to my liking. There was more of a rock sound to them and the thing that captured me most about this album is the theme. To me, Neon Bible is by far their most loaded album touching on religion, overbearing parents, media, etc. This album takes a step back in seriousness and a step forward in genuity. The Suburbs and many others on this album are melancholy songs because they make you realize how wrapped up in technology we are and how we don't embrace small things as much as we used to. My favorite class in college was History of the American City and a lot of things we discussed in that class are on the album. The isolation that comes with living in suburbs, how youth is protected from harrowing things that maybe inner city kids are exposed to younger and even how relatonships are based on what music you listen to and stuff. I like Arcade Fire a lot because they are all early 30's so it's like they've made that transition to adulthood but it's not far away from their youth and that duality reflects in the songs. It might not be a perfect album, to me Sprawl I is a throwaway track and Rococo is pretty mediocre, but the rest of this album is phenomonal and if you're a fan of music, definitely check this album out. This could very well be the defining album of Generation Y. OK Computer is probably the 90's version of this album. It is good in terms of the concept album but the idea of isolation from each other, impact of technology, and leaving youth to go to adulthood is much more fully realized on this album than OK Computer."  [+]  Reply

Musically, it still sounds so fresh and exciting with side 1 being one of the strongest sides of music the metal genre has ever seen. To have War Pigs, Paranoid and Iron Man on one half of a record makes it seem like this is a greatest hit compilation rather than an album. There is a slight drop off in the second half but it is no way near as large as you expect with Electric Funeral and Fairies Wear Boots being absolute classics for the group. The instrumentation on here is simply phenomenal as well with every member of the group shining at one point or the other. As a result of this we get a heavy and cohesive sound that is a joy to experience. Ozzy Osbourne's vocal is extremely impressive on here also as he showcases why he is considered one of the greatest of all time. Overall, this is Black Sabbath's strongest release as it is the most consistent and has some of the greatest instrumental moments they have ever produced. "  [+]  Reply
