My life in albums
by LadyGodiva

My life in albums - a list of albums that had an impact on my life in one form or another the year it was released (or which is very strongly associated with a specific year). These are not favourite albums, more the albums that seemed to be the soundtrack to a specific year.

I have written a why? in the comments for each of the albums. This is probably my most personal (and self-exposing) chart - it has been quite an emotional journey putting this together and writing all the comments. So please be kind if you decide to leave a comment!

Otherwise enjoy! :)

Why? This was probably the first album I was exposed to even if I don't really have any recollection of it. My mum is a big Joni Mitchell fan and claims we listened to this while I did suitably cooworthy cute stuff!

Why? Dad was home looking after his brood so into the Joni void stepped some strutting Stones. I blame this album for the onset of the 'Godiva Pout', something that didn't exist until the Stones arrived on my musical radar…

Why? I didn't know that the New York Dolls existed until much much later but I was apparently a very fashion conscious little toddler and had a baby version of Sylvian Sylvian's hat. So clearly I had subconsciously absorbed the album and it led me on a path to fashion and music obsession... or I just liked the hat! :)

Why? This is the first of many 'influenced by the babysitter' albums. Sharon was a massive Queen fan and often brought this album over to play on my dad's 60's bakerlite record player while she was looking after us. I had this slick feather boa (my mums I think) that I used to prance around with while it was playing.

Why? Joan our next-door neighbour was a fully paid up member of the Tartan Army. She bought me a tartan scarf to tie round my wrist for Christmas. This album could be heard through the walls of our little terrace house on an almost constant basis.

Why? I vividly remember dancing around to 'Dancing Queen' in front of Top of the Pops. I was wearing a rather fetching pink tutu and bashing away on my plastic tambourine. I have loved Abba from that moment forward. I don't care how naff they are, they make me happy and that is all that matters!

Why? Jasmine (the latest babysitter) was a punk, or at least what passed for one in Salford. It is from her that I learnt the value of a good black eyeliner. My mum and dad were not very impressed when they realised that she had been introducing us to this 'noise' while they were off at the 'Talk of the North'

Why? My mum can't sing - this is not me being mean, this is an actual fact. It was this album that gave me this devastating realistation. My mum singing 'Wuthering Heights' is akin to someone scratching metal claws over a blackboard while accompanied by a chorus of wailing cats. Luckily Kate is a lot more talented! :)

Why? Our babysitter Pam was a big Numan fan. She taught me and our kid how to do fun robotic type dancing to 'Cars'. It meant we were busy while she was off snogging her boyfriend.

Why? Adam Ant gave me the excuse to live in satorial excess. I could be anything I wanted a highway woman, a swashbuckling native american… and still get to dance about!

Great concept for a chart - and excellent commentary to reveal how music is intertwined with the ebb & flow of living on planet Earth. I hope you are doing well.

I would have never imagined that Juanes - Mi Sangre was big in Germany. I would like to know more about it.
