This is one of my favourite albums ever. This might have been before John's experimentations with dub on the "One World" album, but I still feel that the space on these tracks owes a lot to dub and the Nick Drake tribute "Solid Air" is just a perfect ode to his friend. The atmosphere Martyn creates on this album is second to none and his experimentations with tape delay effects would be explored more on the aforementioned "One World" album. Perfect!

Highlights: “Solid Air”, “Over The Hill”, “Don’t Want To Know”, “May You Never”, “Man In The Station”.

This album is filled with sweet pop tunes and catchy melodies. From the opening “ba ba ba baaa” of Who Loves The Sun, to the closing chords of Oh! Sweet Nuthin’, the band put barely a note wrong. For me this just pips the more experimental The Velvet Underground & Nico to be the best Velvet Underground album.

Highlights: Sweet Jane, Rock & Roll, Oh! Sweet Nuthin’

The Velvet Underground invented noise in the context of rock, a concept Lou Reed would take to its extreme on his Metal Machine Music. Without this there would be no Jesus & Mary Chain.

Highlights: This album has to be listened to as a whole

This album is just perfect in my view. It was one of the first albums I got into when I was getting into music. From those opening staccato chords on “For Tomorrow” it just instantly caught my attention. The energy never really lets up, peaking on the high-octane intermission between “Chemical World” and “Sunday Sunday”. Though the album is really top heavy with single-worthy material, the second half of the album also has some great tunes like “Oily Water”, “Turn It Up” and “Villa Rosie”.

Favourite tracks: “For Tomorrow”, “Chemical World”, “Turn It Up”, “Oily Water”, “Villa Rosie”.
