This is one of my favourite albums ever. This might have been before John's experimentations with dub on the "One World" album, but I still feel that the space on these tracks owes a lot to dub and the Nick Drake tribute "Solid Air" is just a perfect ode to his friend. The atmosphere Martyn creates on this album is second to none and his experimentations with tape delay effects would be explored more on the aforementioned "One World" album. Perfect!

This album is filled with sweet pop tunes and catchy melodies. From the opening “ba ba ba baaa” of Who Loves The Sun, to the closing chords of Oh! Sweet Nuthin’, the band put barely a note wrong. For me this just pips the more experimental The Velvet Underground & Nico to be the best Velvet Underground album.
