This album is terrifying. It’s the bloodcurdling screams and ocean-floor-lows of a man’s last days. The death rattle and final breath of grunge, and in a sense, of the 90’s itself. The pure, unbridled rage on this album is uncontainable, it feels like the CD is going to snap in half whenever it plays. It’s hard to imagine what the guitar would become without this album. No one had more control over a roaring Stratocaster than Kurt. But this far and no further. It’s hard to talk about this album without talking about Kurt Cobain’s impact on the music industry, but after listening to it, I’m always at a loss for words. So, I will just say: thank you for everything. Your suffering was not in vain. [First added to this chart: 08/17/2016]

This album is, in my opinion, the defining hip-hop album of the twentieth century, and the best boom-bap has ever been and ever will be. Between the recorded musings of a group of real, tough, New York City street lifers, lay a pile of genre-defining number 1 hits. As well as some of the best best production we’ve ever heard and will ever hear, courtesy of The RZA, and some of the most impressive, creative bars ever spit, off the tongues of some of the best to ever do it. Method Man, The GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, etc. This is street gospel, and it will outlive me. Dolla dolla bills y’all. RIPODB. [First added to this chart: 09/18/2017]

This album defeated the sophomore slump. It’s not nearly the cultural landmark that Ten was. But it’s nonetheless a great release full of absolute hits. I would challenge you to not immediately start grooving the moment the album starts. The bass and drums are so delicious here, possibly more delicious than rock had ever been before. And while the soaring solos of Mike McCready rip into the listener, Eddie Vedder one-ups himself and performs with some seriously incredible vocal finesse. It performs on all levels, amazing ballads, tantalizing bangers, and creative bouts of classic Pearl Jam flair that keep the album feeling fresh. Despite the slight lull in the B-Side, this album is really a tour de force. They took on the critics expectations and won, and that’s not an easy fight to pick. This album is the perfect example of and entry point for shoegaze. Huge guitars and bass that drone underneath shimmering, pristine seas of strings and melodrama from Neil Halstead. It’s so easy to get lost to this album, in the same way it’s easy to get lost in the ocean. Terror that makes way to the truest calm. They couldn’t pack more emotion into an album that is so simple. Gorgeous is an understatement. Like all shoegaze it can become a little tedious at times, but the point is to let it cradle you, wrap around you as a blanket and sink into it, and sink into yourself.
