An über imaginative prog/thrash album that actually maintains a sci-fi theme throughout. I love it when an album has a consistent theme and strong music, but 'Snake', the vocalist, with some mighty versatile pipes sure doesn't hurt. [First added to this chart: 11/09/2017]

Stronger than Reign in Blood b/c it has more speed variance and uses some awesome studio techniques, like on 'Ghosts of War' with the band starting with a Mattingly quiet mix, then breaking through, mixed louder, with their usual thrash panache. [First added to this chart: 11/11/2017]

Invented metal. Specifically the brooding kind. Then some songs are hard-edged blues rock with eh lyrics, but the heavy songs easily make up for those weaker tracks because of their revolutionary moods. [First added to this chart: 11/09/2017]

Liked the transitions between loud/harsh metal stuff and alt-rocky beauty. Really takes a strong mix to pull that off. Unfortunately, those loud-quiet sectional changes eventually became predictable, and sometimes they sounded a bit too adult contemporary in the quieter parts. Great lyrics though. A solid album that sounds like one stretched-out song with many peaks and some dips. Maynard James Keenan kills on vocals, same with the other dudes. About twenty minutes too long. [First added to this chart: 11/09/2017]

Innovative guitar stuff that was definitely metal at the time of its release. Roth has a powerful voice too. [First added to this chart: 05/20/2018]

The genesis of rap metal. Fine lyrics. Too long songs. Tom Morello rips. [First added to this chart: 11/09/2017]

I believe this is the only album of theirs that can be considered metal, really. If it's not, it's still pulverizingly heavy and a definite precursor to drone and industrial metals, so it stays. [First added to this chart: 11/14/2017]
