2007 – UNIVERSAL MOTOWN
Produced By STEPHEN STREET
1. Ruby
2. The Angry Mob
3. Heat Dies Down
4. Highroyds
5. Love’s Not A Competition (But I’m Winning)
6. Thank You Very Much
7. I Can Do It Without You
8. My Kind Of Guy
9. Everything Is Average Nowadays
10. Boxing Champ
11. Learnt My Lesson Well
12. Try Your Best
13. Retirement
If you like your British rock with lots of “nanananana”…then Kaiser Chiefs are just the band for you. They are highly successful in the UK, and not so much at all in America. Yours Truly, Angry Mob is their second album, the follow up to their big hit debut from 2005, Employment. No pressure here…just the need to follow up fun hits like “I Predict A Riot” and “Everyday I Love You Less And Less”. Kaiser Chiefs simply delivered with “Ruby”, their biggest hit to date and their only track to make it to the top 20 in America. “Ruby” went to number one in four countries, and catapulted the album to multiple platinum sales. Yours Truly remains their second best record (after Employment). It’s good, but it lacks the exuberance and, outside of “Ruby”, the catchy bounciness that made the debut so exciting.
The better songs here make this worthwhile. “The Angry Mob” may be the best track here. “Love’s Not A Competition” and “Everything Is Average Nowadays” are fine as well, but after that, there is a noticeable drop off. Not that the songs are bad…they are just not as memorable as the band can be at their best. They do rock…but you will want them when they truly bounce, which they did better on Employment. Kaiser Chiefs made a push towards America in 2012, which did not gain them a foothold here at all. They continue to record and tour, having released five albums since Yours Truly, Angry Mob. They remain big hits in Britain, and nowhere else. Kind of a regional favorite, I guess. Worth hearing, but not as exciting overall as their singles may suggest. 2007 – HYPERDUB
Produced By BURIAL
1. Untitled
2. Archangel
3. Near Dark
4. Ghost Hardware
5. Endorphin
6. Etched Headplate
7. In McDonalds
8. Untrue
9. Shell Of Light
10. Dog Shelter
11. Homeless
12. UK
13. Raver
Burial is the moniker used by British electronic artist William Bevan, who’s long career has relied more on EP releases than on albums. Untrue is his second full length studio album, and he hasn’t made another in the fifteen years since. Which does not mean he’s been inactive…at all. Untrue is widely known as a huge step forward in the worlds of dubstep and ambient music, still gaining critical acclaim to this day. He uses a lot of R&B vocals samples, many of which are manipulated, and he has a great ability to create dark and highly emotional soundscapes. There is nothing thin or tinny about Burial’s music…these tracks are deep, layered, and often very complex. You can always hear something new in his songs, and the journey is never a dull one.
The best tracks here are “Raver”, “Archangel”, and “Near Dark”, and “Ghost Hardware” was released as a single from the album. And even though his beats tend to be somewhat choppy, they still absolutely work. Untrue is an album that rewards multiple listens, and is one that doesn’t sink in right away. But if you can be patient, the rewards here are numerous. He’s since moved on to making longer tracks, and he works well with artists like Thom Yorke, Kode9 and Four Tet. All of his work is worth hearing, but his two early studio albums, this one and his self-titled debut, are a great place to start. Burial is an important part of the history of electronic music…if it’s the kind of music you enjoy, then you will definitely want to hear Untrue. [First added to this chart: 12/05/2022]

2007 – COLUMBIA
Produced By DAVE ERINGA, GREG HAVER & LOZ WILLIAMS
1. Send Away The Tigers
2. Underdogs
3. Your Love Alone Is Not Enough (Feat. Nina Persson)
4. Indian Summer
5. The Second Great Depression
6. Rendition
7. Autumnsong
8. I’m Just A Patsy
9. Imperial Bodybags
10. Winterlovers
One of my favorite British bands that American audiences have completely missed out on. Manic Street Preachers were great throughout the nineties before hitting a rut with their sixth album, Know Your Enemy (2001). But in 2007, they came back to life with their eight record, Send Away The Tigers. Back and big as they were in the nineties, with massive guitars and vocals, as well as smart and well crafted songs, this is a joy of an album. The Manics have been a trio since the 1995 disappearance of Richey Edwards, but they sound so much bigger than that. To hear this band rock this hard and be so back on top of their songwriting is truly a joy. The same core three members have been here since the very beginning…something not a lot of bands can boast about.
“Underdogs” is a great song. “Your Love Alone Is Not Enough” includes co-lead vocals by Nina Persson of The Cardigans. “Indian Summer” and “Autumnsong” are also highlights. Send Away The Tigers is not quite at the same level as their nineties classics The Holy Bible and Everything Must Go, but it has moments where the songs would be right at home on those discs. There’s also a hidden cover of John Lennon’s “Working Class Hero”. Truth be told…even a less than perfect, but very good, Manics album is worthwhile. America has truly missed out on this terrific band, who keep right on rolling. They’ve released fourteen albums to date, and they continue to tour with hopefully more new music on the way. At least, one can hope. [First added to this chart: 12/07/2023]
