The very best albums are consistently outstanding throughout their track list. Therefore, Revolver loses out on top spot because it has Yellow Submarine in amongst the masterpieces. By contrast, Shoot Out the Lights limits its track-listing to eight songs, leaving no room for fillers. Luckily enough, R< manage not only to maintain the highest standard throughout, but include an incredible range of styles within the eight songs, from guitar driven heavy rockers to pristine vocal folk ballads, with some good old pop tunes thrown in for measure. The running theme is a failing relationship and the album's release coincided with the couple's divorce. Richard always claimed that he'd written the songs before there were any signs of unrest in the relationship - if that's true, then Linda must have felt pretty uneasy when she first saw them. Did She Jump or Was She Pushed, indeed!

Nice to see two of our top 10 in common.
I have heard 7 of your 10, and the remaining 3 in part.
(A wild divergence over that Sufjan Stevens album, though.)

Among some pretty common selections, you throw in some stuff really turns the head and raises eyebrows. Sinatra? Fairport Convention? Not much on here that it is really to my taste, but it definitely shows some diversity.
