Ironic. When I first finished this chart, Ride the Lightning was directly at the bottom, and now it's at the top. What album has more energy, fury, metallic noise and raw talent than Ride the Lightning?

I wish I didn't have this up here because pairing this with a Metallica album for the top two metal albums reeks of conformism. But Paranoid was one of the first albums I had ever heard and I've always been a huge fan of the album's dark atmosphere and surreal twists.

Post-Metal / Atmospheric Sludge Metal

I've never heard an experimental metal album as perfectly written and damn atmospheric as this. Everything about it bleeds perfection for the album cover's eyesockets.

Death Doom Metal / Gothic Metal / Doom Metal

There isn't a single metal album in the world that does a better job of representing everything that makes slow and dark metal what it is than The Dreadful Hours. Perfectly doomy, perfectly Gothic.

Thrash Metal / Heavy Metal

Almost everything that was incredible about Metallica's earlier album Ride the Lightning had been either matched on. The lyrics are more poetic and relatable, the production is clearer and more metallic and the instrumentation is mindblowing. But the clearer production takes away from the metal aura of Ride the Lightning and the album is generally more bloated. It's still enough to give it a high position on my metal list.

Dream Theater have a stronger sense of thematic and epic delivery than most prog bands, and it shows at its greatest capabilities here.

Traditional Black Metal

The traditional age of black metal has a lot of classic gems, but many of the classic acts were just trying to start a scene. Immortal's harsh and powerful sense of atmosphere make this thrashy and melodic album much more than a classic traditional black metal album. At the Heart of Winter is dark, epic and adventurous.

If you need a pick me up, there's hardly a better song to do the job than a Helloween song, especially off of their most creative album.

I don't think there's a more metal album in this world than Painkiller. Judas Priest came a long way from the hard rock and heavy metal days of the 70's and 80's.
