Common Thread began as part of Don Henley’s quest to raise money for the Walden Woods Project. This tribute album helped with that cause…it was also the spark that led to the Eagles reunion in 1994. That began when Travis Tritt talked all five Long Run era members into appearing in his video for “Take It Easy”, which marked the first time they had all been together since leaving the stage acrimoniously in 1980. That is the most noteworthy part of this album. The list of country artists who participated in this is impressive, many of whom openly expressed the influence that the Eagles had on their own music. The tracks are mostly hits from the earlier and more country period of the band, although there are a small number of later tracks. And the performances are all very well done.
Unfortunately, you won’t hear a single chance taken, as not a single one of these artists put their own stamp on the recordings. Nothing strays more than a little bit from the original versions, which kind of makes the whole thing pointless. And the only song here that even kind of rocks is “Already Gone”. Nobody took on their heavier and faster material like “Life In The Fast Lane”, “Hotel California” or “Victim Of Love”, and outside of Billy Dean’s “Saturday Night”, you won’t find a single song deeper than the surface of their greatest hits. So, no “Those Shoes”, “On The Border”, or “Midnight Flyer”. In short, what is lacking here is imagination and a willingness to take any kind of a chance. The result is artists doing Eagles songs the Eagles way, which suggests that you’d be just as well served to play your Eagles hits compilations than this. [First added to this chart: 02/13/2024]

The Red Hot Organization was formed in 1990 with a simple plan. Fighting AIDS though pop culture. Although they were much more active in the 1990’s, they are still working to bring awareness through media to this day. The organization has released 24 compilation albums, three films and numerous TV shows to bring attention to their cause. Dark Was The Night has raised going on $2 million for the cause, bringing in younger listeners with the inclusion of many newer artists. The songs were recorded exclusively for this compilation, and most of the artists refused pay. Produced by the Dessner brothers (from The National), the cause makes it worthwhile. The music makes it essential. The list of contributing artists is staggering, reading like a list of the best of what rock had to offer at the turn of the decade. And that list is impressive, indeed. A primer for how great music was in 2009, for sure.
Compilations like this are usually average. A good cause wrapped around an okay selection of songs. But with Dark Was The Night, Red Hot and the Dessner’s took the time to make sure that the selection of music was powerful along with the cause. And so, these two discs, while not perfect by any means, are much better than you might expect. Great artists like Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, Yo La Tengo…there’s so much to experience here. If you’re wondering what to listen to from the period, this set serves as an excellent primer. And, when you buy it, you’re giving to an exceptional cause instead of lining a millionaire’s pocket with more change. So, there’s really no good reason to NOT check this out. It’s well worth the time and the money. It’s a great listen, and it’s for a good cause. And it has a load of songs that will make your day a bit better for having heard them. ‘Nuff said.
