One of the things that I am most musically thankful for is that, along with John Prine, Mary Chapin Carpenter was my introduction to country music. Like Prine, Carpenter is not strictly a country artist. But this album is almost pure country, and it showcases everything that is great about her. The best thing about Mary Chapin Carpenter has always been her ability to make everything she sings covered in beauty. And not just with her voice…she also has a true knack for using just the right amount of instrumentation. She never goes overboard. She’s a fine songwriter, and she is as tasteful as they come. And in country music, that goes a long way.
And not only does she utilize some of the best session players in Nashville here, she also gets some quality guest appearances. Shawn Colvin, Benmont Tench, Trisha Yearwood, and Brandon Marsalis, whose soprano sax on the album’s best track (“John Doe #24”) is perfect. “Shut Up And Kiss Me” proves that she can do a country romp as well as anyone, while “House Of Cards” and “Tender As I Want To Be” simply reinforce the fact that she is one of the most tasteful and fine artists of her time. This album won a Grammy for Best Country Album for good reason…it’s very well done. Not perfect, mind you, but for me, you can never go wrong with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Ever. After recording two albums with the Velvet Underground, John Cale made three solo folk albums. He then signed with Island Records and released 3 great albums in 1974 and 75: Fear, Slow Dazzle, and Helen Of Troy. That's where The Island Years comes in.
If you are ever looking for an album bargain, this may be the best you'll ever find. Not only does it contain the three aforementioned albums in full, it also has previously unreleased bonus tracks and some great liner notes...all for the cost of a double cd. And the music? Cale predates punk by a few years, and shows why he's so influential in the genre. Everything here is first rate...even his session musicians: Richard Thompson, Phil Manzanera, Brian Eno, Phil Collins, and Chris Thomas. You're not likely to find a better deal on 3 great albums than this. Well worth owning. [First added to this chart: 08/19/2024]

Eric Clapton became more and more predictable as the years…the decades…went by. His brand of blues after blues, interspersed with JJ Cale impersonations, grew more and more tiresome, to the point where I’d pretty much written him off. And then, from nowhere, came Pilgrim. His thirteenth solo album may very well be his finest work. Why? It’s not a blues album, in that he’s not doing his usual rehash of white boy Robert Johnson. It’s also not a Cale tribute album, because he does absolutely none of that here. The album was critically hated, simply because it’s not typical boring blues that Clapton had been putting out since the dawn of the Yardbirds. What it is is Clapton’s most interesting record ever. As in ever.
Pilgrim IS, in fact, a blues album. It’s just not what you are used to hearing from Slowhand. His playing here is beautiful, and his singing is understated…which is where his voice is at its very best. The critics were right about it not rocking…but that’s what’s actually so good about it. Clapton sets a mood here and sticks to it. It’s a sad record, but it’s also a beautiful record filled with lovely performances. This isn’t just Eric pounding out one blues after another…here, he actually took the time to make a lovely album of sad songs. And it works incredibly well. This has become my absolute favorite Clapton record, because of how restrained and emotional it is. Who would have though that in 1998, Eric Clapton would suddenly make this record? More than happy that he did. [First added to this chart: 02/13/2024]
