Seventy-Seven Sexy Shoegazers
by CellarDoor

Favorite genre after post-punk, this is a list of classic shoegaze releases aka from the 90s.
I tried to stick to the true shoegazers, hence trying to distinguish the albums from dream pop, noise pop/rock or alternative 90s rock. Some choices might seem arbitrary, like not including My Bloody Valentine "Isn't Anything", Catherine Wheel "Chrome", Swirlies "Blonder Tongue Audio Baton", Bowery Electric "Beat" or Telescopes "Taste", but I wanted a list closest to my idea of the genre (with My Bloody Valentine in mind). Also, it's difficult to talk about shoegaze without mentioning all the wonderful EPs. I decided to add my favorite compilations to the list for this reason.
Happy listening and recommendations are welcome :)

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.2/100, a mean average of 93.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 94.2/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 8.9.

Don't know the genre too well so this is a good stopping off place for me to pick up some hints

A great genre, but I there are tons of more recent stuff that you haven't considered yet. Also many of these I would consider alt rock but my bar is high for calling something shoegaze.

Also check out astrobrite - crush, and panda riot - infinity maps. They're both great. Deafcult - auras is pretty good too

@Dingerbell Yes, this is a 90s centered chart for the classic shoegazers.
There are many great releases from the 00s which could probably need a chart...

Are you deliberately not including albums from the 21st Century? There're very good albums by LSD and the Search for God, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, A Place to Bury Strangers, The Big Pink, Yuck and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, to name a few.
