Post-Punk 77
by CellarDoor

My favorite genre finally has its chart !!!
I have chosen to represent the classic post-punk decade, somewhere along the lines of 77-87.
A lot of different sounding albums get thrown into the post-punk bag, and I have tried to strip them down to the basic aesthetics. Therefore I haven't included new wave (B-52's, Devo, Talking Heads...), no wave (James Chance...), post-hardcore (Minutemen, Husker Du...), gothic rock (Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, some Cure...), synth pop (Human League...), synth punk (Suicide...)... So I guess this is my own definition of post-punk and you are most welcome to disagree. I chose a starting point with what Iggy Pop was doing on "The Idiot" and stopped around the morphing of the genre into noise / alt rock mid-80s (The Jesus & Mary Chain, Sonic Youth...).
Enjoy the music and please post recommendations :)

Post-Punk 77 ratings

Average Rating:
92/100 (from 20 votes)
  Ratings distribution Help Average Rating = (n ÷ (n + m)) × av + (m ÷ (n + m)) × AV
where:

n = number of ratings an item has currently received.
m = minimum number of ratings required for an item to appear in a 'top-rated' chart (currently 10).
AV = the site mean average rating.

Rating metrics: Help Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some charts can have several thousand ratings)

This chart is rated in the top 1% of all charts on BestEverAlbums.com. This chart has a Bayesian average rating of 92.4/100, a mean average of 95.0/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 95.8/100. The standard deviation for this chart is 4.7.

Also, what's a good post-punk starting point? Assuming you're looking for first wave post-punk, not the recent revival, I'd start with a few essentials: After that, I'd refer to CellarDoor's chart, found here: If you're interested in Post-Punk Revival, let me know and I'll happily make you a best…

Very good chart. My interpretation of this genre would include gothic rock, though that's a personal thing, and mostly because I was introduced to Post-Punk through 5 bands - Joy Division, Bauhaus, Suicide, Tuxedomoon, and Talking Heads. But still, awesome chart, and even just for Tuxedomoon you deserve some major props.
